.... I'll include pictures of the other items going in the nursery since I don't have them in the pictures. Thanks for your help!
Please share your choice (red or brown) with Ashley in the comments below...thanks!

the brown is more calming
I love the red rug. Bolder is always better in a baby's room. Either way, it's going to look great!
I like the rug and don't think it is too loud for a nursery. It would be great for an infant and fun for a toddler.
But if the other items in the picture are yours (crib, bedding, window shades) I don't think it matches at all. Everything else is really muted. The brown rug is a closer match.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this red rug! Keep it... work with it!
I really like the red rug. I think with the light browns and khaki color you have in some of the accessories the brown rug would be too much brown all together. We actually have a pretty "bold" rug in our playroom (also Pottery Barn and with zigzags but from from PBTeen) and my youngest, 6 mo. loves looking at the colors and pattern during tummy time.
I think the red would work if you tie in other brightly colored accessories. However, it looks like you're currently going with more neutrals and muted colors, so in that case I think I like the brown better for your nursery.
i think if you are keeping the window treatments as shown in the pic the brown rug would would be the best choice, the red in the rug fights with the reddish brown in the wood. if you change the window treatments to a more neutral colour then the red rug could be the one big statement!
I think the brown looks much better with what you have in the nursery. The red is cool, but it would need more red stuff to go with it -- as is, it looks a bit out of place.
I agree with betzhi. But you could switch to white curtains (with red trim or tie back) and use the red rug.
There is another picture that wasn't posted that shows a red dresser I painted. I also have some brighter accents and art I'm going to use. A yellow ABC poster, pillows etc. I moved some more things in there this weekend and I'm liking the red rug more and more. The brown shades don't bother me at all with the rug. Hopefully the accessories will really help to move your eyes since there will be other bright colors besides just the rug and dresser.
keep the red, change the windows!
Chose red if you want a punch of color. Otherwise, go with the brown for a calmer feel in the nursery.
I think the contrast in the red zig zag is GREAT. the first things that babies can focus on are BOLD big patterns.
I would also change the blinds and not just because I feel they are too dark - BUT - I would also caution putting the crib w/in pulling distance of the blinds... we've got a reacher & a puller & it's usually only a matter of time before the blinds lose that battle (i think it was by 14 mos & we've moved the crib AND he still reaches & manages to pull them). You could do those paper cell blinds, (not quite as easy for little fingers to grab & pull on) you can get them in white or the sage green you're using. i would cover the chair, and use the fabric as a valance over the windows...
if you could move the crib, maybe under the windows a storage unit using red and white and green canvas baskets might tie things in.
and keep in mind... that rug's gonna be covered in toys.. in NOT TIME!
I like the brown rug better, but that's just me.
I'm a brown person (don't own red and don't decorate with it), but I love that red rug - you should definitely go for it!
The crib isn't going by the windows. Nothing is arranged yet. We just have things sitting in there. I'm afraid it will be too cool by the windows.
Ballard offers the brown-patterned rug in a lovely green shade (http://www.ballarddesigns.com/Rugs/All-Rugs/Madeira-Rug/p/7834?path=1%2C2%2C1466%2C2512&iProductID=7834).
Although I like the red rug (a lot!), I don't think it works in either in the room or with your chosen furnishings. The green rug has the color and visual interest that I think you're looking for. I think the green rug would suit the adorable owl lamp.

Ah, well then, go for it!
I think I need to see the whole room put together before making an educated opinion. But on what I have to go on, between the two, I would go with the brown. I am a huge proponent of splashes of color but the red rug in that nursery seems more busy than colorful to me.
that red rug would look super cute if you painted the walls a light aqua color. turquoise and red look so feminine and cute together!!

I'd add a stripe of wide red or green rick-rack to the bottom of that crib skirt, throw a pillow with some red and brown in it onto that chair and it's working for me!
I love the red rug. I'd keep it, but agree with everyone else, can't have the crib under the blinds. It's not safe.
Can you tell us where you found the crib bedding and owl lamp?
I think it's going to look fab!
The crib bedding is called Night Owl from Posh Tots. The pictures really don't do it justice...it's darling. The owl lamp is from Anthropologie.
From what we have been shown so far, the red rug (because of both the colour and the pattern) is the centre of attention in the nursery.
The question you need to ask yourself -- do you want the rug to be what the eye goes to in the nursery?
I don't think that a red dresser, yellow poster or pillows are going to change the focus away from the rug because of its boldness. Everything else is very harmonious, even though of different vintage.
Personally, I'd go with a more neutral rug, and put more colour on the walls. (chocolate? Robin's egg blue?)
The brown rug from Ballard isn't available any longer...so I'd love any other suggestions.
I love the red rug! Very bold, yet complimentary. I think the brown rug is too safe. But I definately agree with other readers.... you need to change your window treatments and make a read effort now to make small modern touches to the room with accessories. The owl lamp is a start in the right direction!
go with the red. even though your furnishings are neutral and light, I think contrast is good. Especially if you have some other bright pieces to accent with in your decor. The red is so fun and can easily adapt to a toddler or big kid space. A valance over the windows in another complementary color/pattern would be great to do.
Here are a bunch of wide-ranging ideas for you:
We bought a "fiesta" potholder rug from Crispina made of recycled t-shirts for our son's room. Very fun (and earth-friendly). Can be made from t-shirts or sweaters (wool), and comes in many different colourways. Looks like Crispina doesn't have a store any more (she had an actual store, and a webstore, and seemed to have a number of people working for her making these things), but you can still buy pieces through Etsy.

This is the one we have:

Red and white in a classic gingham (also available in blue) which is less strident than the zigzag rug:

I thought this would b whimsical and complement your owl lamp:

Or perhaps this, would would harmonize your walls and rocker:

One last one!
I think this would be truly lovely in your nursery!!

there is a beige one too, if you prefer, but I think the green would be gorgeous

I'm considering this rug...
http://www.dashandalbert.com/product/view/monty-wool-hooked-rug--RDA044
It would make the room too monochromatic, the opposite of the red rug.
Honestly, the grass potholder rug hits all the right colours -- they are bright without being too strong. (it would also complement your bedding nicely).
The new rug you are considering is also way too bland and muted.
The RED rug wins. It's what the room needs--everything else is boring.
Can you lose the mini blinds (or hang curtains over them-I did that to help block out more light and cold air) ?
Also, the old lady blue chair/rocker thing in the corner is yucky.
I would definitely go with the red rug and add more pops of color around the room. I also think the room would be very cute painted aqua blue.
I vote red rug, but there must be a lot of color--esp on the walls and on that upholstered chair. I vote for bright yellow walls, white window coverings, and a crisp white canvas slipcover for that chair, which doesn't seem to go with the rest of it.
But if you are committed to the pale bedding and blue chair, then go with a brown rug. Doesn't seem as fun to me, but could be very elegant if you accessorize with mirrors and shiny chrome details.
How's the room coming? We all want to see some pics!
