AT:SF, Can you help me find a low to the ground queen platform bed with inset legs and a platform that does not extend beyond the mattress for my tiny bedroom? For example, the Min bed at DWR does not have inset legs and is 12" high...
...Neither do any of the offerings at Ikea or Room and Board etc. CB2's new tatami bed extends beyond the mattress with square edges ouch again! Case Study Bed is close...but per DWR it is 9" off the ground...Blu Dot bed with drawers is close but it has a footboard with square edges (ouch!) How come no one makes such a thing? It seems simple enough right? And a great idea? Any ideas anybody?
Debbie

Are you sure about Room & Board not having such a bed? Their Platform bed seems like it would fit your requirements:

i have no idea why my links went all screwy! Cut and paste the whole string to see my suggestions!
i'm looking for the same and will be interested in what folks recommend.
Me too. I basically want something like the Min, but with an IKEA level price tag. Might be too much to ask but I gotta dream.
I'm a total klutz and fear bumping into the sharp edges of most platform beds in the middle of the night. I've done that enough already with my ugly old metal bed frame (with a spring mattress). A simple, slim platform bed seems like the solution.
what do you mean by "inset legs"?
You want it less than 9 inches off the ground? Just put your mattress on the floor then.
That DWR frame might be as close as you're gonna get in terms of inset legs. That can't possibly be adding more than two inches to your bed's length, no?
I have a version of the EINA from Ikea from a few years ago: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40120595
Not sure if it's low enough for you, but I had the same issue of fitting a bed in a tiny bedroom (technically mine was a closet with a window) and this worked like a charm.
t-dawg,
I think she meant she wants legs that aren't on the edge of the platform, but set in from the sides.
Debbie,
Why not just put the bed on the floor? That's where mine is right now and I'm starting to really like it. Cheap, low and no sharp corners to run into.
Why not make your own platform bed out of some hollow-core doors and MDF?
I think I saw instructions for that somewhere - or was it a show on HGTV?
I am with bepsf, make your own platform with book shelves turned on their side or my husband used two pieces of plywood and 9 large casters and put them in from the edge about two inches from the sides. I love it!!!
Thanks peeps for all your suggestions...I am not very handy so i probably won't make anything but mostly i posted this question because i think there is a market out there for a frameless no footboard bed like the case study bed but a wee bit lower to the ground (i found out it is actually 11 1/2" to the top of the platform) and with warmer legs.
When I said inset legs i meant legs that were tucked under so the mattress looked like it was floating...in any case the key here is that most beds have too much border around the mattress...I am looking for a platform that aligns with the mattress edge to create the floating look.
Also thanks for the suggestion of sleeping on the ground but I want the mattress to breathe.....and finally the case study bed is actually rather high in the end....those few inches really makes a difference after checking out lower models like the Leggero at DWR (which has too much border around the mattress and is pointy at the corners..ouch).
When I find that perfect bed that is affordable I will be sure to post it here.
I'll be holding my breath.....oh wait, apparently it's your mattress that will be holding its breath. I sincerely hope it gets to breathe soon.
Evidently, there's not much of a market for bed bases that make your mattress look like its floating. Maybe there's a reason for that.
I LOVE the idea of a "floating bed". I hate bed frames at all, and my mattress and box spring are just on the floor.
Even though you're not "handy", you really could use a small drill/screwdriver and put stout metal legs on the underside of a box spring. You might have to attach 1"x4" boards first to give the box spring more support, and to attach the legs right where you want them.
Just make sure you have a leg or two right under the center, so it can fully support the box spring.
You could get a slatted bed base with steel sides. Ikea doesn't have them, their bases need support, but they do exist.
Then put a brick or something similar nder each corner and you are set.
Or get some pallets and cut to size, and use as matress support. But these are rough, rigid, and ugly.
I was checking out the futon bed links from above...this one seems decently simple and low, great price and customizable solid wood options (bamboo, maple etc.), and for those who are handy it would be very easy to chop down the height if desired.

or here we go...even simpler:

I guess those aren't "inset" though....but c'mon, what's that? two inches? If you're fighting for two inches you should probably be looking for a smaller bed....or you could just get a low and ugly bed frame (on wheels or whatever) and get a clean looking skirt. I stayed at the Paramount by Philippe Stark and there was a nice low thing going on...couldn't have been more than 12 inches total:

i dont get it... just buy a divan?
okay I know this post is a little bit older but ikea now has something kinda like what you're looking for in the REBBENES frame: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S49870827
No need to be snide about other people's quests... I broke my toe on the leg of a simple platform with legs in the corners, and while some of our mattresses ARE on the floor, we could really use the storage space that some space there would provide. I am glad that someone asked for a reasonably priced low bed with inset legs, no extra framing and space underneath, because it is exactly what I need as well. And I live in a house, not an apartment, so I'm SURE there are others out there who have space constraints and would appreciate a sturdy bed of this design that didn't cost a fortune.
