I just came into possession of two vintage Herman Miller shell chairs. These chairs are upholstered, and while the fiberglass shells seem to be in good shape, the upholstery is not. I'd like to get them reupholstered as long as it's not prohibitively expensive. Do you have any idea a) if it's worth it b) where I might be able to get them redone?

Oliver- it sure looks worth it to us. We have a few thoughts. We have mentioned our go-to guy, Herman at Chalios (1414 W. Pico, 213.250.5344), but while his prices are great, we think you'd really have to be on top of him to make sure he treats the chairs with the attention they need.
Another thought is a great restoration House called House of Brienza, which we wrote about here.

You should take one of the chairs to Julien Benassaya at Classic Design in Culver City. He's one of the top guys in town (as I understand it) for restoring classic modern furniture. And his workshop will make you drool. (310) 841-0120; 3520 Wesley Street. NOT CHEAP. But honest. I went to see him a few years ago because I'd bought a damaged Sarineen chair at auction as part of a lot and wanted to know if it could be restored. Not for a whole lot more money than it was worth, was his answer, which I appreciated. Good luck!

I've talked to some nice people at retroredo in Oklahoma about this very issue. It's their specialty. While I haven't had anything done yet myself, I plan on using them.
