Q: My 19-month-old recently jumped out of her crib so we've been rushing to get the room completely child proof before we move her to a toddler bed and give her complete freedom to walk around while we may be sleeping. The thing we are stuck on is window guards. We live in South Florida and these are basically unheard of here. We used to live in New York and remember that it was the law there that anyone who lived above the 2nd floor and had children needed to have them. So, my question is: what are our options? What is an effective, budget-friendly, stylish way to prevent our little one from jumping/failling out of our low windows?

I did a quick search online and found these window guards from KidsCo. It's called a Mesh Window Guard. In my opinion it looks much better then the window guards with bars, and it says it's complient with US safety standards. www.kidsco.com
Open windows from the top if your screen can be positioned up there.
I can't tell how your windows open but if they slide up, our professional childproofer put "super stoppers" on our windows ( like these http://www.safebeginnings.com/WebComponents/Catalog/Public/showproduct.asp?id=611&cat=Childproofing). Cheap, work well and essentially not visible.
We have angel guards on all our windows:

Super sturdy (my kids actually have climbed on the ones in the living room), easy to install and simple to remove the actual guard- for parents, not for kids that is. During the summer months we have to undo the guard in order to put in the window fan. The guard then goes right over the fan (since it is attached to the sill, not the window).
I have had them for almost 3 years now and they have withstood 2 very active toddlers abuse. Well worth the money.
