i had a similar problem - i went with a table from pier 1 imports. simple wrought iron base with a round glass top. perfect for three parsons chairs and can fit four. chairs came from ikea when they had the pretty green felt covers.

I normally don't love IKEA but it's solid wood and I like black paint and clean lines.
The dropleaf thing works really well and is very compact for everyday use with 2 people but can easily pull over chairs and put leaves up for 4 people.
I want that table!
In a small space, my favorite table shape is round (unless the space dictates pushing a table against the wall for "non-dining" times, then a small square), and my favorite table top is glass.
I'd visit CB2, Chiasso, West Elm, Bo Concept, and IKEA to start with for the table.
If your dining space is open to the living room, and you need to accommodate (on occasion) more than four diners, select at least two additional chairs that don't scream "dining" to work into the adjacent living space, and use them to pull into the dining table on an as-needed basis. Just something to think about when chair shopping.
I'm having the exact problem right now. Either the tables are too small, like a 23" cafe sized or they are too large! I had originally wanted an Ikea Docksta, but even that proved to be too big for my space. I love the table in that photo and appreciate the fact that it is rectangular even more- it's space saving if placed against a wall.
Pier One sells glass tabletops that you can put on one of their bases or one of your own. I got a 36" one on sale for my breakfast area... It's a functional size for four people, but not more than that, and you'd want another surface for serving from...
For chairs - Series 7. Comfortable, light, and stackable when not in use/cleaning etc.
I love my table from World Market, actually. It's 30 by 30 inches and can easily seat four. For chairs I just went with the cheap, wood folding chairs they also carry. The chairs are fairly comfortable and very light so they end up being carried out onto the balcony for smokes and drinks night.
