Hello AT,
I just moved into a rather large, converted-attic space and I'm in need of a sofa. While the loft is rather big, the two staircases leading up to the space are really tight. I was originally interested in the Crate And Barrel Petrie sofa, but it's too long to fit in the stairway. It appears that I might have to go with either a love seat or a sectional.
I've stumbled across the following sofas that share similiar styling and are available in both loveseat and sectional configurations: 1) Room and Board Burke and 2) Room and Board Jasper.
Does anyone have experience with either sofas or recommend some others to check out?
Thanks,
Mike

You might consider looking around for something by Sofas International (sometimes known as "Chameleon," designed by Normand Couture). Most of the designs have simple lines (either straight or slightly curved) and all come with removable backs and arms--which, when taken off, render the sofa a rather easy move. Plus, they can be reconfigured in a number of ways to accommodate a wide variety of purposes.
They offer a variety of solids and patterned fabrics, sit firm and deep. Just a thought.
I'll try and hunt up a number or web-address and post it...sorry.
There was a whole session on sofas big, bad, good, ugly, comfortable, prized high, low, economical, good buy on AT NY .
IT is time that AT refines the search feature. It is rather not very fruitfull to go over the same thing in a short time span over and over and..
and not interesting to come back and write on the blog if it has been on the board. Do you understand what I am saying. I am trying to say the same thing over and over and over again...
My friends recently got the Jasper in one of the 'premium' fabrics (a kind of nubby tweed with blue and brown), and it's literally the most beautiful sofa I have ever seen. I walk in the house and just stare at it.
Their quality is great, and it's quite comfy although definitely an 'upright' sofa (which I prefer), not a slouchy sofa. Excellent for parties and conversation, but not for someone who spends days and days in front of the television.
I waited a couple years to get my Jasper and I finally found one.
It was HELL trying to get that HUGE sofa into my door way on the second floor of my building. It took quite a bit of maneuvering to get it into my door way....but we did it in about 30 minutes.
Measure the doorway first to avoid the mistake I made. I can't move out of my apartment now, because I don't know how I will get that beast out....so I'll stay.
GET THE JASPER.
I just got one and it is the MOST comfortable couch ever, plus it looks gorgeous and holds up really well...even with two NUTSO puppies.
I got it with a chaise and literally my fiance and i spend all day on that couch.
As for moving it in, room and board has AMAZING delivery folks. to get it into my unit they had to unscrew 2 doors and pass it around a balcony. I don't know how they did it, but they did.
i would HIGHLY reccomend both R&B and this couch.
burke is also very upright and very comfortable. i love the memory foam!
ours was delivered on friday and the room and board guys were great. it's a large couch, though, and if the legs didn't come off i don't know if we would have been able to fit it through the doorway.
i also have the jasper sofa and it's very comfy. my only complaint is that the legs don't screw off - i almost couldn't get it through my door as well! craigslist find, $450.
I like the Bantam 73-inch sofa from DWR. It's quite affordable for DWR, but of course there's the shipping cost.

I've been lusting after the Jasper for over a year now, since I went to R&B to look at the Duncan. The Jasper is just unbelievable comfy -- I wanted to nap right on the chaise in the store!
I bought the Jasper about 5-6 years ago. The fabric I chose, a light blue, has faded quite a bit and was the wrong choice. I had high hopes for my husband and cat I guess. But...it's comfy. I would say after 5 years the seat cushions are a little more squished than I would like and I've noticed that it seems a little bit uneven (maybe a spring is letting go?). Also, there is one leg that's slightly wobbly. It needs some tlc. But it's held up well considering the abuse it goes through.
Thanks for all the great feedback. I scheduled a fit test with R&B for Friday. For $25, they're going to come out and measure the entry way/stairs/etc. and let me know what will fit. I'm hoping the smaller configuration of the Jasper sofa will make it, as I'm not a big fan of sectionals.
Originally, I was interested in the charcoal custom color, but may look into the 'premium' fabrics mentioned by aquarabbit. I wonder if they'll stand up better over time after hearing Kita's experience.
One last thing. Aaron, any luck on that URL. I tried Google, but couldn't find the site you were mentioning.
Thanks again for all the input.
I would definitely go with a premium fabric. Mine was the cotton twill fabric - it just seems to get dirty really easy (the color was a bad choice but the fabric is not that easy to clean either) and even though the covers are machine washable, it's a pain.
Other than that, for the price the sofa is really nice and comfy and looks good style-wise.
I have the Jasper 86" and I have to say I'm not pleased. It looked great for about 6 months of what I would call 'average' use - my husband and I, no pets, no kids. Then the cushions all started to look crumply and no amount of fluffing makes the couch look as crisp as I would like. I will agree with others though that R&B delivery is great!
Thanks again for all of the input. The R&B guys stopped by this morning to take measurements, and it turns out that only the sectional will make it through the final entry way point.
I'm not a big fan of sectionals, but it's looking like that might be my only option. A friend of mine is convinced that they might be able to rig something up and hoist it up to my apartment through the balcony, which is four stories up. Anyone know of any companies that can do this? I think it's a bit sketchy.
If I go with the Jasper sectional, I would actually purchase it in the configuration shown on the R&B site: http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/collection.do?method=get&id=378450&cat=58
Thanks again
