we just saw one in Bimma Loft SF (http://www.bimmaloft.com/site/index.php)
they have the adjustable height coffee table (which can unfold to a dinning table for 6). it's called the Calligaris Flexy. http://www.bedroom-furniture-direct.com/Calligaris-CS-5013-GN1259.html#additional
it's very cool.
I own a round one, in wood, probably English from the 40s or 50s. It works with a handle and can be used to seat up to 6 people. Purchased at a flea market, but I've never seen any like it since.
Actually, my mother uses an antique ironing board as her coffee table! I love the idea.
Something like this would also be cool. I went to see this little coffee table in person, its beautiful but the glass top doesn't fit it...I would get rid of the glass top. This table lifts and you can add more tabs to make it a dinning table. Its so cool! http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/fuo/842203321.html
