A beautiful light natural wood oval coffee table...the oval shape will soften the sharp edges in the room & add interest.
You might find something at a used retro funiture shop in the Bay Area.

how much is your so called affordable? $300...$500?

BTW - Have you considered angling the sectional to directly face the fireplace?

Would be more interesting and make TV watching much easier as well...

ditto on the angling; if you are going to put in a coffee table, your couch needs to be further back to prevent a crowded feel; two separate "cube" coffee tables would be nice-keep everything open feeling, especially since you have the lounge-type end on the couch.

I think an oval knoll style table would be great and in white most definitely!

Everything is very angular in this room, so an oval or round table would be best. I'd go with clear acrylic or glass. You could do a Knoll knock off, too, as stephanie1980 suggested. O

I don't like the idea of angling the couch -- you've got the corner spot on the chaise end for optimal fireplace/tv viewing.

So, IMO

It's hard to tell where you're going with this room. I know that you asked about a coffee table. And my instinct would be to start mixing pieces that are not modern. I sense though that you want everything to be modern. The room, you can see from this aerial view would be much better with the couch facing the fireplace or with two chairs pulled up to the rug across from the couch. You are very close to a black, cream and chrome room. A shot of color would be great in the form of pillows, pottery, lamps, etc. The white end table is not great with the cream rug and the scale is off. You need a large round or square table. And artwork- follow the top line of the fireplace around (the horizontal above the mantle) and do not hang things too much higher.

I don't know how affordable you mean. These are really affordable.

about the angling, we thought about it but the space works better how it is with a farm table about 6 feet behind the couch.

Just take a table from online, size it in a word document and then drag it over your picture to see how you like it.

i just refinished the farm table, varnish drying. so that part of the room is a big mess right now.

plus, for color, we have bright orange jasper morrison 'air' dining chairs coming, on sale at dwr for $112.

threadbare - i agree with you about the end table. it was a bit of a disappointment when it came.
i love the collapsible metal one on overstock.

the forest or adesso(although i don't love the base) coffee tables could be options.

by affordable, i'm thinking under $300, which the forest(my fave so far, is not)

this is an inexpensive idea, 3, 2 foot x 2.5 foot wooden stumps. Go to a wood recycle. U can keep them natural or paint red, yellow, or teal.

I don't know why I've spent so much time thinking about your room. Probably because I have my own renovation and it's nice to take my mind off it.

I have a new theory. Farmhouse Modern. You have the farm table and to make that whole open area look most beautiful the balance between the two should be throughout. There is a great blog called Farmhouse modern. You will see that a rustic coffee table in the same vibe as your dining table would be very nice with the modern chairs, coach, etc.

This farmhouse (projects then top right in the picture list) strikes the perfect balance.

Wow. You nailed it. Thanks for the links. If you could see the window seat area adjacent to the living room that I have outfitted with natural woven floor pillows and colorful throw pillows and the farm table next to the granite countertops, you would see this is very much what we have going on.

I LOVE the coffee tale in that architect's photo. Maybe we'll need to look at reclaim wood shops...

That's funny. I actually live in Brooklyn. Have you seen the book called Brooklyn Modern? You may actually find inspiration there as well, it's rustic modern. Also the interior design firm AvroKO is very skilled at this look. If you need a scout at MRC, I can check it out for you.
