AT:SF, My boyfriend just bought a place and is getting ready to work on it. What color(s) do you recommend for the walls? We're planning on putting up wallpaper on the back wall in the dining area (where that hideous mural is) with the Onda wallpaper design in Seafoam from Flavor Paper...
...We're not really sure what the full pattern of the wallpaper looks like, but I know it's not a full wall pattern. We have to keep in mind that the floor (I don't know if it's hardwood or laminate) is Oak, a more general brown oak, but not as reddish as the image...
...The tiling at the front door and next to the AC unit closet door will change to something else. The kitchen adjoins the dining area and so far, the furniture in there is all white. That will change since he will be putting a granite countertop and will be changing the doors of the cabinets to a different color also. The color for the countertops and cabinets door will depend on the wall color, whether or not the kitchen will be a different color from the dining/living area, not sure. The kitchen appliances will change as well, as he's chosen a dark silver metal matching appliance set.
We figured we have to decide on the color of walls, floor tiles, counter top, and cabinet doors depending on the wallpaper we want to put up. What do you suggest? We'd like something modern and youngish. We're both in our mid to late 20s and plan on getting sleek but comfy furniture. Thank you in advance!

I can't stop staring at that mural. It's so bad, I think it crosses the line into being good. Wow. Just wow.
It sure is difficult to make a valid recommendation without anything to go by...
I would go with the bluish-green behind the waves. If you wanted a more punchy look you could go with an orange.
I can't stop looking at it either...wow.
Why not choose the countertop and cabinets first, since you can always change walls later?
I like a neutral grey, not too brown; this is also your entryway so I would probably want something subdued.
Try the Sherwin Williams color visualizer. You could plug in a green for your accent wall.
i agree with bepsf - its hard without seeing any of your furniture or general style choices. BUT going with the floors, mostly white kitchen and the wallpaper, i'd think you could either pull one of the colors from the wallpaper, or maybe do a bold orange or similar. It would complement the wallpaper and work with the warm floors.
White.
I have learned that you should start with your furnishings, textiles, and art. When you have all that down, the paint color becomes much easier to choose, and even sometimes obvious.
I'd go with the light blue from the wallpaper, with a green or slate grey accent wall.
I can't stop staring at the mural. A regular beach scene would be silly enough, but why would you want it to look like someone accidentally backed a truck through your beach house wall?
Haha, that mural is so scary!
Someone clearly spent a lot of time on the mural. It's very 80's with the peachy faux finished walls. I bet the previous owner complimented it with PVC Grecian columns topped with silk flower arrangements, and swagged burgundy window treatments threaded through gold corbels and held in place with plastic grape tiebacks.
Sorry. That doesn't answer your question at all, but I enjoyed the picture!
Put a coat of primer on the walls so you can clear your head from all the 80s decor (which LilyC described so brilliantly). Once the faux finish is gone, you'll notice what kind of light you have in the room (lots of daylight? not much light?), and that should influence your paint colors.
i have been a frequenter of AP for months and i have only now registered (to comment) to say something very important...
KEEP THAT MURAL!
I'd put a mirror there. Also, remove the popcorn!!!
Wow, so many questions... and so much potential!
OK, tile by the door could be something like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/builddirect/2050692156/
The wallpaper you chose would look nice with the other walls painted the pale blue pulled from the wallpaper, or else a cream/ivory. I would put up white crown moulding to tie in the white of the doors. Also, take down the terrible vertical shades over the sliding glass door, and replace the sconces and track lighting. (Restoration Hardware is having a lighting sale right now and they have some great fixtures. Classic/modern so they will last and not look dated soon). Anyway, the kitchen. I think dark wood would look nice with the new stainless appliances your mentioned. If you pull the darkest tone from the wood floors, something like this (Ikea cabinets=affordable): http://cjhomeservices.com/gallery/albums/Kitchen-Projects/Ikea_Kitchen.jpg then choose any countertop/backsplash you like. I would recommend neutral furniture with color/pattern in your accents, like rug, pillows, throws, art, ect.
Post photos when your finished! We never get to see the finished product of these great questions.
The mural reminds me of those cheap, cheesy pictures of Italian landscape you sometimes find in restaurants.
I would pick one of the light colors from the wall paper (I like the light blue) and go from there. But if you all ready have some furniture that will stay I would put that in the room first and pick the color according to that. If you are going to buy most furniture that I guess you can take the wall paper as a color scheme.
I like the wallpaper choice - it really reminds me of a Pearl Jam Poster that I have, maybe the same artist??? http://www.offthewallposters.net/catalogue/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=11155
Anyway, I would paint the surrounding walls with the color of the light green/off white seafoam on the top of the waves.... Since it is kind of a 'busy' pattern, I think a bold color like the main green color would be a bit much.
You have to have at least one costumes-not-optional BEACH party - preferably in December, or January before the mural goes away!!!
Haa heee. I agree though, pick the tile, counters, cabinets, anything that is permanent, then choose the wallpaper, then paint last - it is the easiest thing to change.
Good idea with the coat of primer first to get a clean slate.

scrape the popcorn... it will make things look a million times nicer.
And LilyC's description of the previous decor was spot-on!
Take a photo of the mural, have it printed in large format and tastefully framed, and feature it on the mural wall once you've painted over it. Best of both worlds (and i agree that that mural is *so* wrong that it actually crosses over into the "right" side).
I personally would ahve a herd time painting over it...
"have" a "hard" time, that is...
I actually like the mural. I guess to each their own. I can't go by what color to go cause I'm not sure without furniture.
