Good Questions: Looking for a Modern Wall Bed?

Hello AT,

Ten years ago, I saw a swank, modern wall bed (murphy bed) at a furniture store in Soho.

Now I want to find that bed, or some wall bed for a guest room / edit suite. But all the choices are grandma and very expensive. I'm willing to pay the price for the wall bed that's worth it.

I've checked Dwell, Design Within Reach, etc.

Any suggestions? Elinor

Dear Elinor, This is a great question and we're only going to be able to start to answer this question for you. As you know, there are two parts to the Murphy/Wall bed: the bed mechanism and the cabinetry. What you are looking for is a swank, modern cabinet as any mechanism can be fitted inside. Many swank wall beds are custom made, but we did find a few links for modern sources:

I am looking to buy a murphy bed but want to know if it will work with a Tempurpedic Mattress. Does anyone have a personal experience to share? Tempurpedic tells me that the mattress will be damaged from being stored in an upright position but I don't know if this is definitely true or if it is just a disclaimer on their part. Please advise. Thank you!!

Just purchased the queen bed from www.wallbedfactory.com

I got the Bennett. As soon as it arrives I'll let you guys know how it is. It says it's green which is nice. I was going to go with resourcefurniture.com but I opted to go for this since it's about $8,000 cheaper. Plus you can use your own mattress.

Manhattan apartments are tiny so I was in the market for a murphy bed. My building has restrictions about bolting things to the wall or floor so was looking for a freestanding one which I thought was almost impossible to find. I came across Door to Door Furnishings on East 23rd Street and found 2 that were freestanding and would be much easier to move out with me once my lease was up and just in case it would not be renewed. Here is what I found: Cabinet bed including mattress . I got this one because it was so compact, reasonably priced ($1599 with mattress for a queen size), and freestanding. It is the most amazing innerspring folding mattress that comes with it. The second one that I was considering to buy was this murphy bed with desk but did not have the space for a horizontal bed in my apartment. Door to Door Furnishings is worth checking out for Murphy Beds. They are at 240 East 23rd Street, Between 2nd and 3rd Avenue.
