I don't think it's childish in and of itself. If you put a bunch of cutesy or whimsical stuff with it, then it would take on a kiddie look. Keep your other furnishings simple and more sophisticated than fun and you will achieve a nice balance.

I think it looks very South/central American. Festive, even.

Sometimes people equate fun and colorful with childish no matter what the rug looks like. If you LOVE it, then buy it, childish or not.

I wouldn't say childish... but it does run the risk of looking busy with all those colours and patterns. There's probably a reason it's shown here in a very white room. I think it's a really nice rug though.

I'd say go for it if you think the rest of your furnishings will go with it.

I don't know that it's necessarily "Childish" - I mean, I don't see any bunnies and kittens...

...however, consider if this is the path that you truly want to take in your future decorating decisions. Do you want rooms filled with primary colors and pastels 10 or 20 years down the road? Are you looking to move towards a beachy, country style asthetic with painted furniture, folk art, etc?

If the answers are "Yes", then by all means, this is a great choice for you.

If the answers are "No", then you should probably look elsewhere.

I agree with Spanky. Keep the color on the wall a nice sandy tone, the furniture a simple dark wood tone with clean lines- like crate and barrel(ish) and throw in some accent tchotch in punches of color!

Ask yourself, do I love it? Really love it? If you don't love it, don't buy it. Keep looking, you'll know for sure when you find it. It does take longer, which can be frustrating, but, in my experience it's very much worth it. I hope this helps.

No doubt, this rug has bold colors and has a strong statement from either Nepal or Peru. This tells me the owner of this rug is likely a traveler.

Not my cup of tea, but I think it'd look great in a room with light-colored, neutral walls (I'd prefer bright white), lots of big potted plants, simple (either somewhat rustic or clean and modern) furniture and interesting art on the walls. Get a few throw pillows and little accent pieces to pick up the colors in the rug.

I don't think something like this would work well with more traditional furnishings, bright colors on the walls (or bold, busy prints), or anything too cottage or country.

i think if you love it then it will bring you joy every time you see it. i wouldn't worry about whether others think it is too childish.

It might look childish in my apartment, I'm a graphic designer/nerd so my apartment is filled with comics, cartoons, toys, bright colors and large graphic pieces. This would make me look like a kid.
But if you have a classic style, (and maybe are a little older) I think this would add a great pop of color to a living room, or entry.
If you love it though who cares? Go for it!

I've always loved a collage look -- be it fabric, curtains or whatever. So, YES, I love it. Totally agree with other AT posters who say it will also depend a great deal on what you pair it with. But it is a happy rug and who doesn't want that.

It's got to be taken in context. By itself, it's not childish. What are you going to do with? And how are you going to do it? You could create varying looks with it: modern, contemporary, bold, nursery, child's room, etc. And then there are styles where it might be difficult to incorporate this rug: traditional, Chinese Chippendale, etc.

Who cares whether it looks childish or not? I am not concerned with trying to have a "grown-up" apartment... I just want an apartment that I love and enjoy.

I think this could work nicely if you go for an eclectic, Anthropologie-esque vibe. Definitely consider the context, but if you like it, go for it! Don't listen to the naysayers!

I hate to be ants at a picnic, but I think you should pass. Rugs are expensive and this seems like something that you could easily regret within the next 3 years (I'm going to assume you're under 30). I'm just telling you from experience; I'm turning 28 and I thought my decor was Ralph Lauren-beachy-rustic but it's totally changed and I have a few $$$ worth of furnishings that I'm regretting.

Yes, it looks cool, it's bright, it's fun but I would suggest you go for something that's just as bright and fun but much cheaper from Craigslist or Ikea. If you live in the NYC or LA area you shouldn't have a problem finding a great deal.

OMG! I have loved this rug forever! I think colorful rugs are so great because they can go with anything! This same rug is at Poshtots along with other colorful rugs originally meant for kids but I'm totally in love with.

Does it make you happy? Will YOU enjoy seeing it everytime you walk in your home? I like to choose a few things that make ME happy even at the risk of snooty comments from others.. which I have received before on something that I completely adore. The cost is no object to me if it is something that makes me smile every time I see it (and no, I'm not rich and saying break the bank)!

By the way, the person that made the snooty comment, I found out has a very bland house and they are a very unhappy person... so who really cares!

childish was not the first thing i thought of when i saw this picture.. this rug makes me think of those homes filled with many hued vintage finds displayed in every nook and cranny with care and love.

Frankly, I do find it childish and somewhat unattractive. I was surprised to learn that Fluor stocks Alexander Girard designed Flour carpet tiles and they are very inexpensive for what you get. You can get the Girard designs in two sizes of the carpet tile, and believe me, they are colorful. Somewhat child-like. But a whole lot more attractive and sophisticated than this. Friend, take a look before you buy what you are considering.

As others have said, if you LOVE it then go for it - due to the fact that you are questioning it though, I get the impression you don't LOVE it or you'd already have bought it.

depending on the price...somewhat...my first thought was folksy/native as well....I love the colors..happy and it seems you also feel that way....you can use this rug in different rooms for different moods as you live your life!..(sometimes factoring the price/quality ratio makes a diff on the purchase or not..to me)

If you love it, then let that be your guide. It's not my favorite, but luckily taste comes in all shapes and sizes. I do think it would look a little bit more "grown up" on a darker or black floor, but it's kind of silly to paint a floor for the rug.
