AT:SF, My boyfriend and I moved into a new place a year ago, and the only thing left to buy is a bed. This one struck our fancy -- it looks great and fits our decor wonderfully! But we have some reservations about it being cold and uncomfortable. Does anyone else have a steel frame bed? How does it treat you in the night?

I ordered that exact same bed from Overstock and the slats broke in 2 weeks.
But the design is very cool so I repainted and fixed it so it's stronger now.
Those circles are hideous.
I want a warm, snugly bed with a soft headboard. I can see that headboard being down right dangerous, but to each his own.
I find it hard to believe the stylist couldn't come up with a better look for the photo shoot than that. Hideous.
Wow that looks cheap...
...I'm sure your neighbors won't mind the headboard banging into the wall during extracurricular activities?
that looks soooo uncomfortable, but maybe it's just the mattress in the photo.
I've been sleeping on a metal bed for 18 years and see no difference from other styles of frames with respect to comfort or temperature. However, that particular bed frame looks as though you might get your head stuck in it during the night.
this may sound silly, but we wanted a headboard that we could put our hands through instead of having a solid plank.... And bars would have looked weird in the room. But we need something separating the bed from the curtains that hang behind it. It won't be up against the wall....but now that you guys write- it may be uncomfortable for our heads. Even if we use a lot of pillows.
Mangabanga: Does your head get stuck in the holes?
I have the Perspective bed frame from Room & Board, and let me tell you if you want to watch TV in bed while propping yourself up it's very hard to have bed frames that are essentially a hole and not a solid piece of board. Even with pillows they just sort of sink through and then your head hits the top bar in an awkward position.
The above sentiment is only for watching TV in bed, for actual sleeping there is no difference to me whether it's a metal or wood frame, as long as it doesn't collapse in the middle of the night!
My friend has the Min Bed frame in Red from DWR- it looks great. You can add the plex-glass head board that goes with it. She had a headboard made in fabric that attaches to the wall it looks great.

all that I can think about are handcuffs...
I have a metal bed frame and it is not cold at all. My sheets are flannel and my bed is very cozy. Having a great bed is a big priority for me.
I like the look of the bed itself but hate everything else in the photo with it; it looks out of place. I've got an antique metal bed that I adore- it just needed a little reinforcement but it's been great. My only concern with that frame is that the mattress looks like it came off a camp bunk. If you were to go with something thicker, the footboard might be awkward.
The bed above would look much nicer and more modern if it didn't have those circles in the "headboard" and "footboard." Plus the bedding is, as someone earlier suggested, dated. This looks like something out of a Home Decorators catalogue.
I don't think steel is necessarily cold. I used to have a steel canopy bed. Just get proper bedding.
Another advantage of steel - a steel headboard is withstand a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.
Metal beds are bad feng shui, for what it's worth. They're "dead" and don't channel energy like organic materials. I realize this comment makes me sound like a crazy person, but hey, maybe you're crazy, too, and want to hear about feng shui. :)
we've got a deep purple velvet duvet to pair with it and I'm hoping will look better than what they've got going on in this pic.
Although it's not why I bought it, handcuffs were one of the first things to go though my mind when I saw this too.
I love the circles, and the minimalist styling. I don't see "getting your head stuck" as being a realistic concern.
I do not have a steel framed bed but an antique wrought iron one instead. I love my bed frame and wouldn't change it for the world -- the best part is that you can reach out and the metal is always cool to the touch which I personally refreshing. I have never gotten anything caught in it -- but then again I guess I don't try to either.
i have a metal bed, and it doesn't have these circles, but it has an ornate design with open areas sort of like this.
i have never gotten anything stuck in one of them, head, hand or anything.
ours is comfortable and sturdy. no coldness or anything like that before.
no creaks, although it's about time to check all the screws for tightening. just to make sure.
and other have mentioned it above but year the circle design is good for other activities as well.
I have had a metal bed for the last six years and have not found it to be cold at all. You're sleeping on a mattress, not the metal frame. And the mattress sits on wooden slats. Trust me, you'll be cozy.
As for the circles - I happen to think they look great! The first thing I thought when I saw that bed is how much a female friend of mine would love it if she saw it. It looks very hip and modern to me, but the circles add a playfulness to it. I love it!
I like the idea but not the execution.
Following up on Louberrypie - I used to have an ikea (fake) steel fram bed that I loved. Until my feng shui friend pointed out that metal bars symbolise jails and cages.
I now have a wooden captains bed. Supposedly more in harmony with nature.
I had a beautiful medal frame for years and loved it. The only problem was that it would become loose every few months and tended to make a lot of noise. It wasn't ideal for reading in bed but I loved that I could stick my feet through the end (it's just how I sleep!). I am also sure that if I had had a few more pillows, it would have fixed the reading in bed problem. I never got any part 'stuck', that idea seriously made me laugh my head off!!!
Personally, I was in love with steel till my girlfriend reminded me that it is going to feel like a hospital bed. The compromise is a platform bed.
I have one reason (and it's a really good one) to have a metal bed frame. Bed bugs find it harder to live in them, and have a harder time crawling up the legs of them, than in/on wooden bed frames.
You still have to treat the mattress and the sheets and stuff, but that's much easier than getting them out of wooden legs.
Nuff said.
We have a metal bed - not steel though. I bet steel does not oxidize and much easier to clean than whatever our bed is made of. Also, it seems to me that some fabrics (like satin) are bad for the metal, they help it oxidize or smth like that.
I've had a steel bedframe for about three years, and I absolutely love it. I haven't had any issue with the temperature of the frame impacting my sleep.
(For what it's worth, the entire photo above just looks cold. The linens make it look like some kind of a prison bed!)
I guess I should have also said that we have a metal bed frame and love it. I really like the circles in this bed frame, and I think with a really bright, modern-art-esque throw or duvet it could look bright and pop-y. Good luck!
I'm and interior designer and very rarely do I recommend an iron bed unless the client is insisting. There are a number of reasons. First, it is cold to touch and cold looking. Secondly, it's not very comfortable to lean against to read or watch TV. This bed in particular does not have a high enough headboard. Notice how they show the pillows flat? If you want to prop up decorative pillows, you won't even see the design. Also, make sure that they support on the bottom is enough to go without a boxspring because if you add a boxspring to this bed you won't see the headboard at all!

I have a metal bed and it's no problem; cozy and warm as I need inside. Actually some mornings when it's hard to really get up I purposely lay my neck on the cool metal a few minutes. But for what it's worth I just read yesterday that a metal bed is bad feng shui as it conducts electricity and can interfere with positive chi.
I have a natural steel bed frame from Room & Board and even the slats are steel. Love my bed, no issue with cold. I watch telly propped up on two large pillows, no problems. Plus that bed disassembles easily into individual lengths with no screws or hardware, so it's a breeze to move it.
I have a metal bedframe, and to me, it's no different than any other bed I've slept in. However, I'm not the type to prop myself up on the headboard to read or watch television, so I may not be the best judge.
I have a steel canopy bed and it is amazing. My last bed was a wooden antique bed--it was pretty, but it literally broke in half. So now I have a glorious metal bed. I don't see how it being cold is really relevant because wouldn't be sleeping directly on the frame. I should say that my bed has a solid headboard, which is nice, but it seems like the circles headboard would keep all of your pillows in one place.
And Feng Shui, do people really believe in that? I guess people believe a lot of things. Don't worry, you probably won't get electrocuted and metal comes from nature too--you just don't have to kill a living tree to come by it.
I must warn about the quality of a metal bed, any bed really. The cheaper you go (unless it's Craigslist of course) the more quickly it will make you miserable--creaking and breaking--and will end up in a landfill sooner. Try Room and Board, or try Craigslist for an R&B bed.
I love the circles in the bed frame. I've been looking at this frame myself - I think the headboard is high enought to stack pillows on when you need to, as well as being perfectly functional for whatever 'other' uses you dream up.
I also loved the 'you'll get something stuck in it' comment. Made me laugh out loud, but then I remembered that at one point I had ornate metal garden chairs that my cat used to get her head stuck in, so if you have a bit of foolishness on four legs in your house perhaps you'll need to curiosity proof the bed... *grin*
I have a silver-finish metal bed from Ikea. I read and surf the web in bed often, and it was a bit uncomfortable until I got some firm Euro pillows to tuck behind my pair of standard pillows. I haven't had a problem since. It's perfectly cozy and comfortable because of the mattress and bedding paired with it. I've had it for 8 years and it's still just fine.
i'm sure a well-made steel or metal bed is as good as other beds...
the one in this particular picture just doesn't look very good...looks like it was made in some machinist's shop...that's all
yeah that circular design is nasty and no doubt about it the cheaper makes of metal bed frames really look a bit naff. i'd opt for a wrought iron or painted metal bed frame... theres some nice ones to choose from in our store.
you guys all know that overstock is a regular retailer, right? they buy from the same factories and trade shows as the rest of us. not overstock at all.
this bed comes from china and costs $62.00.
