Susan sent us an email. She writes: I am going to be in Chicago this weekend - any (modern) stores that I shouldn't miss? I will be on the Near North Side. Thanks for any advice you can give me. I'm from the San Francisco Bay Area....

We did a similar post back in March 2008, which is a great place to start, but it's always good to hear what the Apartment Therapy readers have to say (plus we are busy building some Visitor's Guide posts, so reader feedback here will be a big help).
Please let Susan know your favorites in the comments below...thanks!

If you can make it up to Andersenville, I highly recommend stopping at the 5200 and the 5400 blocks of clark street -- Roost and Brimfield are favorites of mine.
I don't live in Chicago but I thought Post 27 had really nice mid century pieces not cheap but every thing was in excellent shape. Located in Ukrainian Village also near by is Salvage One fun to look through
Andersonville is the place to go. Chicago Home Garden magazine did a story on all the places to go (with a map), here's the link:

Scout in Andersonville is my favorite.
5221 N. Clark
Yes....I agree with thirdcoastgirl. Start just south of Foster (George Lowell there) and head north. Scout, White Attic and Room Service are my favorite spots but there's lots of cute stuff all along Clark Street.
I'll also chime in about Andersonville--make sure to hit up The White Attic and Room Service.
Assuming that you are not looking to buy a piece of expensive mid-mod furniture, then pay $500 to ship it to the west coast, check out estatesales.net and find a local sale that has some cool inexpensive stuff you can carry back with you.
Broadway Antique Market. One of my "must visit" places every time I go back to Chicago. I've gotten some great stuff there at reasonable prices. They are mainly Deco, MCM and 70's cool. www.bamchicago.com
If in the Ravenswood/Lincoln Square area, I always enjoy browsing at Ravenswood Antique Mart. They have some great mid-century finds. A bit pricey, but it's fun to see their set ups and get ideas. Located at 4727 North Damen, very close to all the other suggested Andersonville shops.

I also enjoy foursided in Andersonville. Their prices are reasonable and I always can go home with a little something, which is always a success in my book! Primary focus is unique framing, but includes a mix of vintage finds and new art/gifts. Located at 5061 North Clark

its not cheap, but Jayson Home & Garden has some great stuff.
All are great suggestions...but mid century and old is easy to find is SF. For the money and the unique look I would check out Caste on Halsted street...it's a favorite haunt of mine and is very effective at plucking cash out of your wallet!
Children's Hospital Thrift Store (corner Fullerton and Lincoln) and The Ark Thrift Store (Lincoln Avenue). Don't miss them!
all those are awesome options (some of them my favortie regular stops) for vintage shopping, but if you are looking for new contemporary stores these are all located in the River North district:
