Anna is looking for flat pack furniture: Would you recommend any stores that ship flat-pack furniture? I'm already shipping some things via container to London, and because things are much cheaper in the US, I was wondering if I could find some things whilst at home (SF) over the holidays (shipping is by volume, so it's got to be flat-pack).

I always get the illusion/anxiety when I travel and move that I won't find what I need in the new place
two (or a few) things I'd consider:
in England there are Habitat, Conran's, I think Muji and I bet a host of other shops in the world of wonderment in the low price end of high design
american things look wrong outside of America, the shape, the color, the style... you'll be wanting to go British in how you dress and how you decorate (maybe not ion how you eat) within a WEEK
shipping is hella expensive, will wipe out all savings
won't there be some kind of import or duty on new stuff you bring in?
shopping is one of the best ways to get to know a new place... of course the best is memorizing the new place's stupidest TV commercials
travel/move light
and you never know what the exchange rate will be in this mad world we all woke up in
When I moved to Tokyo for a couple years, I ditched most of the American stuff I had and put the rest into storage...
...and although new things were way more expensive there - it was alot of fun exploring the shops and flea-markets, loading street-corner castoffs into my used Honda Prelude and getting hand-me-downs from American Expats returning to the US.
England has way more interesting resources than we do here in the US, and you can always take the train or a ferry to the Continent for additional shopping venues.
