Seems like something you could make for a couple of bucks -- not to say it looks cheap, I LOVE and would love to try this myself. Find a similarly shaped vase at a thrift store (maybe a hard thing to do....), figure out a way to get a hole in the bottom (also probably not too simple) and voila!

Anyone know how to do that second step?

I'm working on a DIY project to mimic this look. I got a pendant lamp in the as-is section of Ikea that has a really simple metal "base" - and it has an screw-on attachment that holds a shade. I've been on the look-out for an acrylic bowl that I can cut a hole in and use as a shade.

That's a pretty unique light fixture - You're not going to find something like that off a shelf someplace...

...so why not get creative and do a DIY?

Get some gallon wine jugs and use a glass-cutting tool to slice off the bottom - then use a light kit to wire it up and hang it from the ceiling.

Apparently drilling into glass can be done like this:

"It is possible to drill a hole in glass. They make a bit for this. It looks like a masonary bit (drill with an insert at the end). You should use putty to form a dam around where you want to drill and fill it with rubbing alcohol and a little salt. This cools the bit and adds an abrasive. There is always the chance that you will hit a void in the glass and it will break or shatter. Wear eye and body protection while doing this. Good luck." (from doityourself.com)

all you have to do is go to your local lamp shop and they will drill the hole and do the wiring for a reasonable fee... should be way less than a $100.

They are still expensive, but a bit cheaper, if you are mostly in love with the shape. (you have my sympathy because I have long admired this light -- it is very beautiful. And Michele de Lucchi is one of the top living lighting designers in the world -- he's responsible for the Tolomeo, amongst many others)

if you are planning a diy project - try a cake stand cover. if you can find a glass store nearby, ask them to open a large enuf hole for the wiring element.

the only problem with this wud be the heat. dunno abt the lamp pix'd above, but the glass on the diy will likely get very hot - in which case, if you have kids or are tall, might consider hanging it high or just paying the price for the actual lamp. small price to pay for safety.
