ATDC reader Mary would like some help setting up her living room:
"I have a new red leather sofa and love seat in a contemporary style and would like some suggestions on where to find an area rug to go in front of it. Also, I would like some suggestions for a new cocktail table to use. My current one is a large dark granite one with matte black iron legs, and the color is just too dark and drab for the new pieces. Thanks!"

Commercial Flour Sa...
Check out FLOR tiles www.flor.com. They have some really beautiful tonal tiles would work well with your sofas. As for a coffee table, I think something low and white, in a round or elliptical shape would look nice. CB2 used to have one but I can't find it on their web page anymore. Of course the Saarinen marble coffee table would be spectacular but who's got the cash for that? http://www.dwr.com/product/saarinen-low-oval-coffee-table-coated-marble-1.do?keyword=saarinen tables&sortby=ourPicks
A grey or cream rug would look nice with the red. Maybe a simple, low, glass top coffee table.
I'm thinking a super-fluffy wool rug. Like. . .REALLY fluffy.
I love the sofa's and agree with the fluffy rug.
maybe you could get your slab cut into an oval and put the same legs back on it. with a different rug it might show up better.. don't know if getting it cut would be cheaper than a new table or not.. but it might be an option
medusa12120 - she's asking for advice, not your opinion.
Keep the coffee table--it helps to balance the bright redness and slickness of the couches. I agree that a lighter rug would work better with the red and would alo help the stone of the cofee table. Something with some red and gray (but not too much).
Love the sofas and love the coffee table! i think a furry, cream flokati from Ikea would look great under the coffee table, lightening up the space and making it cozy at the same time.
I actually think your current rug works well with those sofas (you don't need to have everything be of the same era). Move the rug over so that the front legs of the sofas rest on the carpet (which will make it appear more contemporary). For coffee table, I'd go with something much smaller and round and oval in shape (that will break up the heaviness of the current pieces). Good luck!
I actually think the furniture, rug and table all work together and that a new wall color would actually do the trick. I'd go for a grey that pulls the rug and granite together. Maybe a couple small throw pillows too.
I also think that paint would get you there.
how about Pantone Dove 15-0000
http://www.pantone.com/pages/paint/paintselector.aspx
also, could the coach and loveseat be set up facing each other? breaking up the two blocks of red would help a lot. something taller- a floor lamp, plant, display shelf- would also look good.
I like the new Angela Adams rugs, you might go for this one in tones of red.
I could see one of those coffee tables that has a glass top where you could put stones or something else natural. Maybe this one from Ikea?
well, I would do a low simple black, or dark wood, coffee table, or even a couple of cube tables grouped together. You definitely need a throw and some pillows STAT to soften up the sofas. A rug with stripes (maybe) in deep reds and other earth colors will blend with the wall color.... The shelves are ok, but you also need a large painting and maybe a mirror grouped on that wall...the shelves and things on them, look a little small with the oversize furniture. A side table or 2 and a couple of lamps for light will bring everything together.
First off, love the sofas as I have the red leather Klippan in my space and love it.
That said, several things need attention, the table is I think too large and a touch too tall for the couches so something low and perhaps oval, say a white oval table.
I would agree that the short, white shelves w/ small items spread out on the walls aren't doing it at all. I'd go with maple or beech or similar type of medium toned wood or something in the teak/smoked bamboo shade would be even better, perhaps 2 longer shelves, one lower and one higher to place stuff on if you continue that route, but better yet, place something dramatically large and bold in the way of artwork behind the sofa instead to give interest to the wall itself.
I'd like to see something white, such as a mild shag for the area rug that's a bit bigger than what you have now, one that is wide enough for the couch and love seat to complete sit upon and extend out several inches to really define the sitting area.
Add a floor lamp and perhaps 2 end tables with some fun lamps, need not match but be similar in height/shape for lighting and that should help pull the room together some.
Good luck
Rearrange the couches so they are parallel to one another. Find a great glass top table and graphic modern rug by going on-line to cb2, or by taking a trip to a mid-century modern store. Add a couple fantastic floor lamps, and, wha-lah! Instant make-over!
Can you paint? If so I agree, keep it all and paint first. I think that table is pretty cool. The rug works too. I would pull out other colors from the rug with pillows and accessories. Maybe add an ottoman in one of those colors. Paint the table legs gloss black to take it modern.
Accessories, accessories, accessories
medusa lives up to her name
Many people annoy me when they confuse "contemporary" and "modern". These are contemporary couches, as Mary states in her question. No one made any mention of modern couches, or even wanting them.
Anyway,
The rug, you can keep. I think a low glass coffee table would be nice to replace the granite one. Pillows in the lightest accent color from the rug would tie it all in. Can you hang some larger artwork on the walls? Or paint?
Love the sofas, and the suggestion to reshape the granite type is good. Then paint the legs. However, as a previous post suggested it might be too expensive. A round or oval top sounds nice. The rug I would not do fluffy too cheesy. I believe it requires a nice bold modern design or just a light color to compliment the sofas. May I suggest that now that you have these large pieces of furniture. The wall decorations look a tad puny. Maybe one bold item will do it or strong graphics. You want to balance the weight of the large pieces. Also love the color of those pieces, good choice.
durhamdeb,
With wha-la do you mean voila? Respect other languages and culture. Thank you.
oh please click212,
I hardly think durhamdeb was disrespecting another culture/ language just because the word was mispelled in his/her comment. relax
I'm not sure about the suggestions to put the sofas parallel to each other. Based on the number of cushions, the sofas don't appear to be the same length and might look a little awkward facing each other.
I don't mind the current rug, but I would swap out the coffee table for something wood or glass. I can't tell what is happening with that door in the back corner, but I prefer a full door over the 2 half doors (or no door at all depending on what is back there).
More and bigger art would also be nice.
Keep the table. Change to a neutral rug. I think the biggest problem is the back wall...maybe something larger, like a framed print. Or cluster the smaller elements closer together. Matching black frames might be nice.
Definitely a new rug, check out EQ3.com, based on the rug pattern then you need to select the coffee table in wood or glass.
Rug has pattern on the borders then you can do a solid coffee table in wood, like the Ginger collection from EQ3.com, or if you decide on the rug that is irrgular or geometric pattern, then go for the glass or glass and wood finish coffee table.
If you go check out this company then you know what I mean, Foreign Accents Rug company

it all depends what other colors do you want to add in the room. You want to do a darker color like black or brown. And you need a highlight color - yellow, orange or gold.
Have fun!
Do try changing the sofas so they face each other...and to make up for space difference, put a small end table next to the loveseat.
I think a lower glass and metal table would fit better, something with two level of glass, and you could store magazines or books underneath.
The wall is all wrong.
Shelves are a good choice, but you need longer shelves with larger items on them, preferably a few larger art pieces or photos, and them some of your design elements, the plant, the rock, etc.
As for a rug, those red sofas are SCREAMING for an ivory flokati!
I also agree about the door suggestion for the closet, one door would look better, but that is if you care about that part.
Also, while the red is colorful, you need another color to complete the space. If you can find metallic and glass tables, mimic the metallic color in pillows, frames, etc for some glamour in the room. The sofa's are already glam...so up the glam factor.
Think of adding a beautiful lamp, either on a side table or a floor lamp...and more interest in the room with decor items, some patterns, and larger items to mimic the sofas!
