We've asked at a couple midcentury shops for referrals but haven't had much luck. I'm considering replacing with canvas webbing, in which case I'd feel comfortable going DIY, but would really prefer new rope.

If you get to the point where you're considering DIY danish cord, here's a 3 - part video showing the technique on a bench:

Folks who do caning often do rope seats - or they know someone who does:

I've never done rope, but re-caning a chair turned out to be really simple, and a LOT cheaper than having someone do it. I'd just buy new rope and do it myself
There's a Shaker furniture shop on Dempser in Evanston just a half block west of Chicago Avenue that re-canes, re-tapes, or re-cords chairs. They are the only place I know of.
hey! those are the same chairs that i grew up with! cool.
My parents just had theirs done in NW Indiana - near Michigan City. A place on Rte 20, used to be Helen's (gay bay).
I have one of these chairs that needs refinishing. Does anyone know anything about them like history or orginal designer?
