ATDC reader Megan is looking for recommendations for comfortable chairs:
"I am looking to replace an Ikea Tullsta chair (pictured left) with a chair/ottoman combination for reading and general lounging. I'd love something in orange or green colors to match my room. I love Room & Board chairs, but the closest physical store is in NYC and I don't want to buy a chair online without sitting on it! Does anybody have good thoughts about places to buy chairs in the DC area? I've lived here for three years but have never been furniture shopping here, so I'm not sure where to start. Thanks!"

Megan,
We love the Martine chair from Crate and Barrel pictured below in green ($900) and the Karlstad swivel chair from IKEA pictured below in orange ($400). Both are super-comfortable but obviously the styles are quite disparate. Do any readers have green or orange chair advice for Megan?

I have the Veneta chair from Plummer's with the matching ottoman. It's one of my favorite places to snuggle up with a book or watch TV on. It comes in a mushroom and terracotta colors.

Also, as far as I know, Room & Board is still planning to open a store in D.C. (maybe the U Street area? can't recall--but go look through the most recent DC open-forum here). So if your timetable allows, wait it out. But def go to the Mitchell Gold store in the meantime. Their prices aren't cheap, but I really love the upholstered slipper chairs they made for Storehouse (RIP) that I bought several years ago.
If you have a car, you should also check out Upscale Resale in Fairfax County. You might find a great bargain that'd allow you to afford reupholstering, in the exact fabric color and pattern you want.
(and: do you have space for an upholstered chaise longue? would be a bit different than a "regular" chair, and terrific for reading and lounging...and napping!)
Thanks for the suggestions! For the moment, I'm not looking for specific chairs per se, but places to look for myself. Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams is a great suggestion, just a little out of my price range. Upscale Resale is a great tip -- thanks!

If you were considering Room & Board, MG BW is NOT out of your price range.
That orange Karlstad chair is definitely not comfortable. Itchy and hard is what it was when I sat in it. :(

I got an armchair similar to the one at the link from Target and it is the best armchair I've ever sat in. I've had it for nearly two years and it has held up beautifully. It's very roomy.
I paired it with a storage ottoman (also from Target) and it has made for great relaxation.

I've gotten several pieces from them. They're small, chic and locally-owned. (o:
There is a company called EQ3, they are upgraded IKEA, so if you are looking for something better quality and good design in modern style, check this company out and they do have dealers in Maryland and Virginia.
I have the commander chair, it is a great reading chair, and it comes in Orange - pretty bright one. And they offer the small rubix ottoman that comes in various colors. You can get one in pattern that will accent your room. A new ottoman came out last year, it is call Honeycomb and it has storage too.
There is also a rocking chair called James... I think the pricing is great for CUSTOM made furniture, so you don't have to limit yourself to the colors available, but a little bit more like what you want. Go express yourself through home furnishing.
