Q: While flipping through the pages of the Fall 2009 issue of Luxe Interiors + Design magazine, I came across this page (larger photos below). The room looks nice, but I was more interested in the two water photos (or are they paintings?) on the wall. I keep on coming across similar pieces which I'm guessing are by the same artist. Does anyone know who the artist is?

The thing about water is it is such a popular subject and so many photographers/painters/sketchers love to use it, so there is a very good chance that it isn't the same artist. also, it's hard to recognize any revealing details in such small photos. This would be a good excuse to hop some galleries in your town that carry contemporary art because you could probably find a local artist who does art of this vein for you to be interested in! OR DIY!!!! Go take some photos of the ocean/lake/river/body of water/puddle and have it blown up, a field will also give you the same feeling and textures, then you can get the exact size you need for your space. (both of these options will probably be cheaper than the exact person who was in these!)
who can tell me about the chandelier!? that is amazing! (the one on the top)
i'm DYING to know!
xox,
Ava
It looks like the same artist who's piece won ArtPrize here in Grand Rapids this past October, Ran Ortner from Brooklyn I believe.
The artist is Alex Weinstein.
the top one could be Vija Celmins
Thanks everyone for the comments! I believe sdmika was right, I looked up Alex Weinstein and it does look like he is the painter! Thank you so much!
Avaberlin, the first picture is of a project by the Chicago architecture firm Wheeler Kearns Architects for a condo in the old Montgomery Ward building. I don't know anything about the chandelier but maybe you can email them and ask about it :)
Contact the editors. They may be able to help you. (Well, they *are* able to help you, but whether they're willing is another thing!)
You'll probably like Ran Ortner's work:

The painting is by Chicago based artist David Klamen, which the owner of the home, Paul Gray, represents at Richard Gray Gallery.
Roni Horn also has an amazing water series
Avaberlin, I found out that the chandellier on picture 1 is by Josiah McElheny. Just search for his name and you'll be able to find tons of pictures.
I have a series of oceanscapes close to that.

... except mine are printed larger.

Oooo! Nice!
I totally agree with the DIY idea. Are you into photography and do you know Photoshop? If not, I'm certain you can take your digital camera out to a local lake or pond, snap a pic and find a friend who can recreate this in Photoshop. It would be easy. Then have large format prints made.
I have had this poster bookmarked in my favorites for ages: http://www.allposters.com/gallery.asp?startat=/getposter.asp&APNum=3282234&CID=498DDBFE93BE4AC3996D2982DA261FF6&PPID=1&search=mygallery&f=g&FindID=0&P=1&PP=1&sortby=PD&cname=&SearchID=

Hi - Regarding the chandelier in the top photo, the chandelier was found at an auction, it had been salvaged from an old ballroom in Indiana, it is not a new piece. The chandelier is made with small glass crystals. Josiah McElheny's piece "The End of Modernity" is made with blown glass.
Emily B is correct - the work is by David Klamen. Klamen is represented by Richard Gray Gallery, where I work.
Thanks

The two smaller paintings shown in the second picture you posted are the work of artist Mary Beth Thielhelm. She is represented by the Sears-Payton Gallery in NYC (searspayton.com)
Hope that helps. :)
