Westwood from Room & Board
Q: My girlfriend and I have to buy our first grown-up, real-money couch (IKEA won't cut it anymore), and currently we're considering the Westwood, from Room and Board, with the Avec from CB2 running a distant second, mostly because it comes in only the one fabric choice.

Avec from CB2
We live in a small town in the middle of Illinois, so we can't actually go try either of these out. Do you have thoughts on (or experience with) the Westwood or the Avec, or recommendations for alternatives?

My husband and I just bought the Soho from Z Gallerie and we love it. ON the website it only comes in one color (it looks bluish, but is actual more of a slate grey). They do have other special order fabrics that it is available in. You can call and they can send you swatches.
Love the westwood! I was just looking at this couch the other day. Another more affordable option is the Devonshire sofa at urban home: http://shopurbanhome.net/shoppingcart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=52_78&products_id=732
We actually have this sofa from Room and Board. We got it at a sample/floor sale for half price. We also have another sofa from Room and Board as well. The sofa is really nice to look at and people always comment on it when they come in. We have it in the stock fabric, which is a nice dark brown and the fabric is really durable. With all that said, the sofa is VERY FIRM. No kidding. It isn't a cuddle up and get comfy sofa. So if that's what you are looking for, this might not be your sofa.
We also looked at the sofa you mentioned from CB2, we loved the look of it a lot online! We went to see it in the NY showroom and I have to say that the fabric on the floor model was a mess! The sofa was really cool to see in the store, but the color shown online wasn't really accurate in terms of shade and I thought that the fabric looked really beat up, so I'm not sure if that an indication of the quality or not. I know showroom pieces can take a beating...but this was bad. We have other pieces from CB2 that have geld up so far great, but this fabric was a definite no for us.
Sorry this was so long, but I had actually gotten a bit of experience with both sofas! Good luck!
I just anted to add that we have had the westwood for about 6 months now and it gets a lot of use, and the cushions have stayed tight and everything ha stayed really firm....but its definitely a sitting up straight kinda sofa, haha.
What's wrong with IKEA?
I like this one!

Picture it in new dark blue velvet fabric and high gloss painted legs!
CB2 and Room and Board are not much better than Ikea. If you want something that will hold up for years, go for Huntington House, or Smith Brothers of Berne, or Flexsteel. All of them make the look you are after.
You can't go wrong with Room & Board for sofas. Any of 'em.
But you might also want to try Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams, although you seem to be heading a bit more modern than their mostly-transitional styles.

There is a HUGE difference in Ikea and Room & Board.
I think the Petrie sofa from Crate&Barrel is a much better choice.
It is a beautiful LOOKING sofa....but it does not even look
comfortable.
Of course it all comes down to what YOU want....
but having been down that road....and buying my first sofa based on looks....well, let's just say I won't be making that mistake again.
IMO, as important as aesthetics are....it should be really comfortable as well. There are a lot of beautiful, stylish sofas that also offer the "comfortable" factor. I personally didn't think either of these offered "comfortable".
It is however, a gorgeous sofa.
If you have a Macys nearby, there's also their Zen Sofa:

(which is undoubtedly available in more colors than what's on the website)
"What's wrong with IKEA?"
Watch this video by Pottery Barn comparing the build and construction of their sofas to an IKEA sofa - Room and Board and Crate and Barrel (but not CB2) are comparable in construction and quality w/ PB...
http://www.potterybarn.com/stylehouse/decorate/quality/
...bear in mind that PB, C&B and R&B sofas are by no means the "Best" sofas on the market - but they are notably better quality than IKEA.
I was thrilled to see the westwood as apartment therapy loaded on my screen! My boyfriend and I bought this sofa in the blue velvet fabric for our first apartment together (and the chair, too) and are absolutely in love with it. The quality is extraordinary, and it is incredibly comfortable but never needs all the fluffing and smoothing that a sofa with separate cushions requires. Everyone who comes into our apartment talks about how amazing it is, but it's simultaneously pretty understated—it's neutrally gorgeous, and so comfortable you almost don't realize how great it is until you think about any other sofa you've ever sat on. Really, I can't recommend it highly enough.
We got the longer size because we wanted to be able to nap on it, and we've had many people stay over on the couch (with a sheet neatly tucked in to the couch) and everyone says it's really, really comfortable for sleeping—wide enough not to feel cramped, and plenty long, and the cushion is very comfortable.
I feel very strongly that this sofa is much better quality than the CB2 sofa, or an IKEA sofa. My old apartment had a CB2 sofa, and after about seven months it started to look pretty shabby, and the springs made some noise when you sat down. Very disappointing for the price. That absolutely happens with IKEA sofas as well, but at least their cheaper. If you can afford the Westwood, though, go for it—it's one of the best sofas on the market now, and if you have the good taste to appreciate its beauty, it belongs in your home!
I would suggest making sure that the sofa is LONG enough to fully recline on. Believe me, it makes all the difference in the world on lazy Saturday mornings in front of the tv.
I have the Lenox from Room and Board and I absolutely love it - nicely tailored but also quite comfy. They don't have the fabric available that was standard when I bought it, which is too bad.
I don't know if I could even buy a sofa that I hadn't sat on first - I must be super picky... I went to R&B two times - the first round to sit on every single sofa in the store, the second round to select one from the four or five top contenders. I think I remember trying out the westwood (although it was over a year ago) and didn't like it because it was too firm and I found the high sides a bit constricting. But it is a beautiful looking sofa.
Room & Board is a lot nicer than IKEA.
I have a R&B sofa (Hawthorne) and I love it. I realize that's not helpful for the Westwood, but this sofa has moved from Chicago to New York with me and endured a number of spills (I'm a messy eater who likes to eat in front of the TV) and it still looks nice.
We just got the Eugene from Room and Board {and absolutely love it} but the Westwood was on our list. The only thing about it is that it is VERY square so the back was not comfortable for me without the use of a pillow. My husband who is a good 6" taller than me loved it; he could scoot his butt right up to the back so it was more supportive and comfortable for him. The Eugene is really comfortable and on the whole we have been very pleased with Room & Board. Really top notch service and product {and way better quality than Ikea :) }.
one thing I think people don't realize about Room & Board -- you can get any fabric on any frame! this time last year, I decided that what I wanted more than anything was a velvet sofa, but I didn't like any of the sofas that are listed with velvet on the site. I wound up with a pale blue velvet Loring, and after 9 months I'm still excited to plop myself down when I get home from work. and if you want to pet fabric samples before you decide, you can order up to 10 for free.
We just ordered the Zen couch from Macy's for $700!!! Online it only lists two colors, but in the store it comes in more options that can be customized for no cost (you just wait longer for delivery).
A good sofa can last 20 years or more, so you need to think long term if it's a big investment for you. The Mad Men look is popular now, but once people get sick of it, it'll be like having a Keep Calm and Carry On poster on your wall. Will you still love that style so much that you won't care? (Maybe you will. I still love Mission furniture, even though it makes people think I'm in an 80s time warp.)
A good sofa is a major investment. Do not buy one without having seen and sat in it first, even with recommendations from strangers.
Just because you are in the middle of Illinois is no excuse to not head into "the City". Take a day over the holidays (after Boxing Day), and hit the major furniture stores, checking out sofas. Better yet, take 2 days, stay overnight, and make a real project of it.
Think long and hard about how you want to use it over the years, and how long you intend to keep it.
The Westwood is a trendy sofa you may tire of in 2 to 4 years. Worse, it looks terribly uncomfortable for anything beyond polite chit-chat with company. Watching a movie? Taking a nap? Reading a book with with kids? How durable is the upholstery?
Check out sofas at the usual suspects -- Room & Board, Crate & Barrel, Macy's... but then also check out places that you might not have considered -- Montauk for example, or Euro furniture stores (different look), Geroge Smith (it's a pain that in Chicago they are in the Merchandise Mart)... And then start checking out Craig's List and the newspaper (especially for estate sales) for more affordable versions.
Good luck!
i was looking at the avec and it used to come in a lovely red too. saw both fabrics/colors in person and the one that is currently available is not so nice in person.
ended up with room & board jasper and will say that in general the room & board sofas are much nicer. the fabric at CB2 just not so nice. probably a bigger indicator of more ish.
I would go for the room & board. I have a CB2 sofa that I am very happy with. With that being said I have had this sofa for about 3 years-it probably has about 2 more left in it. It's a single cushion sofa and the fabric is starting to pucker in places. I also had the habit of sitting on the same spot on the sofa and it's becoming obvious. From what I know room & board is much better quality.
I agree with the others who said that Room & Board is MUCH higher quality than Ikea - I don't know how you could even compare the two. We have a sofa and a chaise from R&B and love them both - and after 3 1/2 years, they still look perfect. Ours are extremely comfortable, but obivously that could vary greatly from sofa to sofa. You should definitely make the trek to Chicago to try them out in person - not only to guage the comfort, but I find furniture also strikes me differently in person in terms of color, texture, size, proportion, etc. - I often end up getting something different than what I had picked out online.
Also, if this is the look you like, check out the Petrie sofa from C&B (also better quality than Ikea).
I have this couch from Macy's in chocolate brown. I've had it for a year and a half and it's holding up well...as well as being quite comfortable. The pricing definitely makes it a good deal.
I was in the market for my first real, new, "grown-up" sofa about 6 months ago, but I had picky requirements: it had to be around 70" long, clean-lined, and a pull-out sleeper. I looked at lots of stores and websites but wound up finding what I wanted at La-z-boy, of all places. I special-ordered it with fabric I liked and I've been happy with it. It might be worth it to check out "traditional" furniture stores along with the websites.
EQ3! Our couch is from EQ3 and is so comfortable yet very stylish! They are light and really well designed. You can also choose different upholstery to match your place!

Good luck!
Sorry forgot to mention, there's an EQ3 in Illinois and they deliver too! :)
I have several pieces from Room and Board and the quality is incredible. Overall it is a great value and the pieces should last several years. I have had a Metro sofa from Room and Board for 5 years and it is in great condition. I don't have any pieces from cb2 because while they have great accessories, their furniture is just not made as well. If you go to Room and Board and CB2 you will easily see that their quality is much better in person. Also, if you have an issue or a problem their customer service is amazing for years after you have purchased something.
If you are looking for something more comfortable than maybe you should look for something that has cushions rather than a tight back sofa like the westwood, but if you are all about style I think its a beautiful sofa that will last for years if you care for it properly. Good luck with your selection.
Hi, I have the Avec from CB2 and we like it very much. The fabric is stain-resistant and is good quality - grey microsuede. It's comfy, too.
Good luck with your decision! I think you probably can't go wrong.
Corona from Macys. Great couch tons of reviews on here for it. Comes in choc brown, a great green and some others. We have the couch in green and 2 chairs in the brown.
look for a macys with a furniture department. there should be one somewhere sort of near you.
I recently bought the Avec sofa. I love the color, size and style and it appears pretty well-made for the price. I too live outside of Chicago and drove 3 hours to test both this sofa and a couple Room and Board sofas. All were nice, this one just fit my preferences better.
This sofa looks so uncomfy I don't want to be an adult
Hey "small town in the middle of Illinois...."
Have you been to Good's furniture in Kewanee???
You cannot buy a sofa without stopping at Good's for a day or two (they have a bed & breakfast....).
I have this sofa in the backless style. It's beautiful but I wouldn't recommend it if you plan to use it for watching tv or reading- it' not cosy enough. We've had it for 3 years and the middle is sinking in due to wear. We had an Ikea Ektorp sofa previously which held up really well for 6 years. I got rid of it thinking I wanted a more "grown up" clean line style. Also, the fabric is theoretically "washable" but dry cleaning led to faint permanent marks- overall not a sofa for a family. When I get my next sofa I will stay away from the beautiful yet uncomfortable mid century looking ones- especially now that we have a child.
I have a similar style sofa from Room & Board -- Reese -- and am very happy with it. The men who delivered it were also very prompt, careful, and courteous.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a wall paint color that would compliment a robin's egg blue couch?
I don't think this sofa ever came in a backless style. Also none of the fabrics from room and board should ever be drycleaned unless its a slip cover. They have a care instruction sheet on their website and nothing is mentioned about dry cleaning. Make sure you speak with someone from the store you are purchasing your upholstry from before trying any cleaning methods other than instructed. The wrong tratment can ruin a fabric permanately.
