Q: I love these shelves and think that I could reproduce them fairly easily with stock wood and trim from Home Depot. A little black oil paint and they should look great. But I am stuck on the chrome tubing that is used to separate and support the shelves.
Does anyone know of a source for pretty chrome tubing and fittings that could approximate this look? I checked the plumbing department at the Home Depot but wasn't thrilled with the options there (silver, but not polished). I am looking for something shiny!

A REAL plumbing supply store would have chrome waste pipe that could be cut to the length you need...
...and you don't really need fittings - just use a hole saw of the correct size to drive shallow circular holes into the shelves to fit the pipe lengths into.
It can be used for not just the uprights, but also curtain rods...
I made almost exactly the same shelving unit for my former design office.
Check out this website - plenty to find

hmm. well the fittings might not be necessary structurally. but i like the finished look they give.
