Q: I really love the pattern on this wall and am looking for a way to re-create it in my own apartment on perhaps a slightly smaller amount of wall surface. Would creating maybe 3-5 stencils and then painting be an option?
Is there a interior wall paint pen that you know of? Maybe there is a wall paper that already exists close to this that could work ? I really would prefer the DIY route though...any leads or ideas?

Sharpie makes a great paint pen - the tricky thing is that its oil based. Works great, though. I used a white one in my kitchen.
I agree, sharpie or bic brands make great permanent markers.
that makes me nauseous. i can imagine myself sitting in your living room, on your couch trying my best to avoid eye contact with your walls.
to each their own! i'd look for some wall paper. that would probably be the easiest route. but if you want to be hands on maybe you can dip different shaped objects like glasses or bowls into paint and make random patterns. make sure though that if u want the circles to have the same line weight to use bowls / glasses of the same thickness. and u could even add the random splash of colour into your design by randomly placing a few colored ones.
You could definitely use a standard circle stencil or make your own stencil and use paint pens or sharpies. Just make sure to add "standoffs" between the stencil and the wall because they will bleed like crazy. We used to use felt dots while drafting in design school to avoid the dreaded ink smear. Great pic!
I wouldn't even use a stencil...just get a compass and insert paint pen. Voila!
Paint pens from a hobby store work really well. Get different sized jars and bottles and use those as your stencils. Just make sure to start with the larger ones, then the next sizes down, filling in the 'holes' with the smaller size.
I'm with Yves on this. While it looks visually appealing in a photograph, it might be too much to live with on a daily basis.
If you're not against wallpaper, find similar wallpaper instead of drawing in all the circles.
this design is my standard "doodle" on the edges of notebooks...
a stencil and permanent marker would do it.
I'd look into matte wall decals that you can apply yourself (And, they are removable too!). They appear as if they were painted on the walls. You can have them custom made from your own design or they can help you out. The two places I know of that do this are: www.dezignwithaz.com and www.whatisblik.com
dezign with a z already has some circle sets they call "bubble cloud" but it's not as graceful a configuration as you've found here. good luck!
How about using a black pencil, for a softer look, a la Sol Lewitt wall drawings:

This is my inner child's dream!
ps Love the Elizabeth Peyton art!
That is wallpaper -- you can see the seams -- if you're just looking to recreate it, maybe the source of the photo can tell you where the paper is from.
you can create the pattern and print it on a wallpaper sheet. look for a printing shop in your area that offer large format printing services, they have this paper and they can event print out from a .jpg image. hope this help.
If you're using stencils, and I think that's your best bet, tape it on and then paint the area nearest the stencil/wall line with an artist's glazing medium (it's a clear liquid), let the glazing medium dry to the touch, then paint with your paint, you'll have perfectly crisp clear lines (no bleeding paint beneath the stencil). It'll take awhile, so it's worth having multiple stencils and carefully planning out the space you'll paint, but the method will get the best results.
Don't put this pattern on your wall. Just don't.
