Q: My plan is to update my bathroom by painting the plastic laminate cabinets and adding new hardware. Unfortunately, the ugly counter top has to stay. What cabinet color would go well with the beige-yellowish counter top (larger photo below)? Please help!

hard to say what is the flooring and the rest if the fixtures toilet, shower, tub colors and finishes. I think simple white is the best bet especially since you have a white counter, you could paint the walls something of your liking.
Best to use a semi gloss paint in this case.
Save your time and money to replace the doors and reface the cabinet.
I had very similar (builder's grade) cabinets in my old house, and I covered the laminate part (leaving the wood) with self-adhesive oak veneer that I bought online. Then I polyurethaned the veneer and it looked pretty good, if I do say so myself. (I can't recall the cource, but if you Google "self-adhesive wood veneers" you should find something.) It cost me about $100 for a total of 6 cabinet doors, one side panel, and the fake drawer panels and I have a little leftover. Your cabinets would take more work since the stiles on mine were oak, but it looks like new cabinetry when you are done.
If you really want to paint, I'd take everything apart to paint to get the best coverage, and paint some neutral color, like chocolate brown or a nice gray, depending on the color of your flooring and any other difficult to change colors in the room.
That countertop is not that bad. You could make a big impact by changing out that dreadful faucet though. Maybe brushed nickel with matching hardware and then you could paint the cabinets a deep brown. Would look something like this:

Ooops! Lowe's site just went down. Figures!
$39 at Home Depot buys you a fresh, all-white modern vanity with brushed nickel hardware and a clean, white top. All you need to add is a new faucet.

Hmm...I can't find that when I click on that link for Home Depot - but my local Lowe's does have vanities for $69 and up!
I love how samantha asked for paint colors and she got pretty much everything but. I say dark brown! Glossy!
I have the same situation and was going to try a glossy black. Let us know (pics :-) ) how it turns out!
I have the same cabinets in my kitchen and painted them turquoise. Great color for the bathroom, too.
Since it's not something you plan to preserve, I think it would be a lot of fun to paint it a bright happy color that makes you smile in the morning. I have no idea what your color style is, but if the top is a bit yellowish, you could go warm reds or oranges, or you could contrast with a periwinkle.
wow these cabinets just will not DIE lol I have the same ones. I second the glossy dark brown motion
You can paint counter tops. Benjamin Moore has products just for that. Then I would recommend two coats of furniture wax to protect the paint.
If you have gosh awful formica in good shape but just OLD, two coats of furniture wax will make them look like new. The counters should be immaculate before you wax them. I usually use bleach, but I spilt a NEW bottle of toilet bowl cleaner on a stained formica counter top, and I was amazed. Be careful not to leave on too long, as it is HARSH and meant to clean porcelain, but it will CLEAN the formica.
Shape of the cabinet is never going to look anything "traditional" so play up modern and go with really, really shiny black, dark brown or red. Think laquer. Then do the oak bits a contrast color, also rich and shiny.
But, for the amount of time and money you will spend making it look good, I'd by the plumbing how-to book at Home Depot and remove this whole unit for a cheapy new one and get a new faucet. If you avoid the plumber you can do it all for maybe $150. Will not last forever, but will blend in/disappear. We had a cheapy in one condo and it looked great and lasted 5 years without showing wear.
Painting a cabinet can be great, but tends to be a good solution when it's real wood and therefore replacing it with laminate cheapy would be a step back. You'd be doing a slight step up with a newer laminate one!
Painting laminate is probably more trouble than it's worth, but if you really want to, I'd go with some sort of blue. It would be easier to just paint the oak bits something daring...
I am excited for this one! I have the exact same "builder's special" cabinets from the late 70's. I hope we get some good suggestions!
At the very LEAST reface those doors. Otherwise ur just putting lipstick on a pig. Maybe medium to light gray for color?
