Q: I'm a former Chicagoan now living in Dubai. I was scavenging for an Eames lounge and found this in the local classifieds. Just take a look at the pattern. I wonder if its original and if it is are there other custom patterns on this chair.

Editor: We've seen Eames-style loungers with patterned upholstery before but are not sure which patterns (if any) were original - can anyone track down any info for T.M. ? Let us know in the comments below...thanks!

Shaw's Original Fir...
Wow, that is one awesome fabric - Don't know if it's original but I sure hope you bought it!
I'm with SaraBa; if I had this in my area, I'd have jumped on it, original or not. I love that!
New Eames Lounge Chairs from Herman Miller and Vitra only ever came with leather (Herman Miller offers a huge range of colors) - but NO fabrics.
Replacement leather pads can be spendy, so folks frequently reupholster their chairs using fabric.
I've never seen a vintage Eames lounger in anything other than black leather (and by "vintage" I mean prior to the recent explosion in reproductions, ie between 1956 and the '70s). Of course there's a chance that this is a vintage lounger that's been reupholstered, but the chances are slim (especially in Dubai) and it'd be pretty obvious from wear on the plywood and the metal feet if that were the case.
It's also worth remembering that "originality" in this context really doesn't mean anything. A brand new Herman Miller Eames lounger is built with the same blueprints as a 1950s Herman Miller Eames lounger, and the Chinese knock-offs are EXACT copies of both. All of them are faithful to Ray and Charles Eames' original design.
someone say it's wretched. please. why does it always have to be me?
No, thebradseed, I'm with you. I've never seen a reupholstered Eames Lounger (with a printed fabric, at least) that wasn't wretched.
i love Eames.
nice!
hello, i'm newbie in Dubai :)
I don't think the patterns are original, just a new creative expression used to update the chair. Can look smashing. Here is a link from designer Victoria Klein's website for another great looking chair. http://www.victoriaklein.com/images/portfolio/2pl/2.jpg

I'll agree with thebradseed as well. It doesn't do it for me, too busy looking.

if not now, when?
if not YOU, who?
hahahahahaha
I work down the hall from a Herman Miller showroom and every once in while they have an array of their various chairs (lounge, and plywood) in differentt wood finishes and fabrics, I am wondering if this was a sample from one of their showrooms...
