A grape-ish purple would look great and give it some punch. Judging from the picture, it would go well with the roof as well.

How about a dark aubergine? Or go white to brighten up the porch area?

I think you should paint it a deep but earthy purple (not plum but something with some grey in it). It is goes well with existing colors and even picks up the grey-ish-almost-purple of the roof tiles. I bet that you can get some inspiration for good purple tones from the decorative grasses in your front yard. Good luck!!

I think you should go with your first instinct; a deep red would be stunning! Gorgeous contrast with the pale green, almost a Parisian look.

I agree that a nice purple would be awesome. Teal would be good too, but I'd go with purple.

What a cool house! Love that curved roofline. I was also going to suggest aubergine. Or, a chili-pepper red would be punchy. Extend the color down to the floor and steps to get the effect of the color spilling out. If you don't already have a light fixture in the entry nook, install one. That pop of color will look really cool glowing at night.

I see a deep yellow gold more intense than the mustard or a deep blue in the green family or even a deep green/black

I like the red idea, myself. You don't really have a Christmassy green there, so I don't think you're in too much danger of a shocking Christmas theme, especially with the mustard yellow trim.

Red jumped to my mind, as well. It won't look Christmas-y because it's a very neutral green. The red door will POP!! :-)

Do something bright... the door doesn't necessarily need to "match" the house and I would agree that it needs a punch.

I think mauve would be really nice. I would probably be boring and go a couple shades lighter than the house. Red could work, you just have to be careful about what shade you choose.

In this instance, I would work with the trim color and go with a bright orange door. Or, paint out the house trim and coordinate the door color.

Because the door is inset in that porch, it will darken the way the colour looks from the sidewalk, so I'd compensate by going lighter, like bright yellow.

I think if the door is too bright, given the rest of the colors of the house it will feel like the door is jumping out at the sidewalk and leave the rest of the house looking understated. I think you need to create an accent but not one that leaves the rest of the house behind. I am sticking to my earlier stated, and OneHappyGirl's idea of grape purple.

I love that so many people are suggesting reds & purples. That's exactly what I was thinking - like either a really deep dark red or an eggplant.

(And I think the green would need to be a bright kelly green for it to look Christmasy.)

Red is a classic, i think it would be fine. I also like the eggplant/purple-gray suggestion, but I think it could be lost in the shadows.

Terra-cotta. It'd be your house's muted palette version of the traditional red door.

A deep chocolate brown. It will extend the space back and make it look bigger/roomier. You might consider painting the steps and the entire foundation the same brown color.

Then you can hang a bright orange or red wreath on the door and it would really pop. A bit like a lantern flame at the end of a tunnel, inviting you in.

The right red on your front door would be welcoming, warm, classic, and complement your home's established colors. The Sherwin-Williams web site would allow you to try different colors together on illustrations of homes similar to your easily, quickly, and free of cost. The colors on a monitor can't be identical to a specific, actual paint in a specific, real life location.

However, by using its web site you could narrow your options down to just a few reds that you like a lot. You could buy inexpensive sample quantities of those promising reds and test them individually on location, looking at each one over a period of time. That way, you could find the prettiest red for your front door.

My home's exterior walls are Burma Jade (bluish green) and its exterior trim is Pearl Gray. My front door's best red turned out to be Enticing Red, the color of ripe watermelon. I had concerns similar to yours, but after using the above strategy my home doesn't look like a Christmas house at all. Although it took a while, it was worth it because I'm confident that I chose my personal favorite.

I think you should paint the door to match the trim. It will really bring out the unique shape of the door entrance.

How about terracotta? Almost a blend of your chosen red and the mustard of the trim.

Plum! Not quite as deep as aubergine, but not red enough to look like a Christmas tree.

A fuschia/magenta might look intensely awesome if you have the chutzpah. If not, a purpley brick red would balance the sage greenish really nicely.

slate blue, or a grey blue (much as i'd like to say magenta), given the tones of the roof, the trim and since it is a recessed , partially covered door, a rich, muted blue would lend the best soothing refuge effect (which i'm surprised hasn't been suggested), really!

Definitely go with the deep purple color. It will offset the green (and the mustard color) beautifully and add a bit of pop to the house.

Wow, thank you all so much for your suggestions! I am loving the idea of eggplant or some shade of purple/plum! These shades didn't even cross my mind as a possibility but now I can really see how it would work with the other colors. Now eggplant is competing with my original idea for red although I'm leaning toward eggplant. What about a color for the cement stairs? Eggplant or something else?

I agree with the eggplant idea. For the stairs, I would go with a charcoal gray. It would harmonize well with all the colors and do a nice job pulling the roof into the color palette.

Your house is very nice!! I would paint all the trim and the door black. It would give a good contrast.
