"Please help! I am having a terrible case of decorator's block on the color to paint my kitchen. I'm getting a lot of good ideas from your color contest but nothing has clicked so far.
Criteria:
1. Must look good with the deep red in my adjacent kitchen dining room (VERY similar to the deep red room in Danny and Carlos' living room).

2. Must be sensible for the kitchen. I was considering cream for awhile but was talked out of it because of cooking spatter.
3. Must look good with my trim & cabinet color (Benjamin Moore's Galcier White) and other cabinets (IKEA tidaholm oak).
I'm not afraid of color generally but I am still too sober or traditional in design sense to want a vivid green or orange.
For now at least. Thanks!"
Any ideas for Hazel, who looks deep into her kitchen remodel?

What sort of vibe do you want it to have? Do you have fun dishes, etc? Are you installing new cabinets, or just painting?
I'm intrigued!

How about a med-dark blue-grey along the "cooking" wall and then creme for all the other walls?
You could always do a tiled/stainless steel backsplash for easy cleaning, too. And then choose whatever impractical color you want! ;)
I have a galley kitchen. One whole wall is vintage cabinets I'm repainting Galcier White (this wall also has my fridge).
I'm replacing the other side of my kitchen (shown above) with tidaholm oak cabinets.
I'm going to probably do a white subway tile backsplash, but I do need to worry about cooking "off gassing" since I cannot afford a hood...yet.
I think we have the same stove! It's hard for me to tell what kind of light you get through those windows and hard to discern what tones are in the flooring. Have you considered a grey-ish moss-y sort of green—could be deep or pale. Or maybe a medium toned warm grey? If you want something warmer and more bold, how about a deep chocolate brown? It could look modern or traditional depending on your dishes, linens, art, etc.
Have fun and paint some tests! Oh, and don't forget to post an "after" shot so we can see how it turns out.
Your remodel may not be this extensive but...
If you're an avid cook, you might want to move the stove to an exterior wall. Then, when you get a hood, you can vent it to the outside.
The guy at the appliance store told me that hoods without an exterior vent aren't really doing much of anything - maybe a decent grease catcher. But not much else.
Ralph Lauren's Homespun goes with everything.
What about some kind of teal. It can be very sophisticated and it's dark enough so it's not crazy. Plus, it'd look good with cream if you decide to paint something else that color or have furniture or accents in cream. It looks like you have some kind of chair rail thing on your walls, but I can't really tell what's below it. Have you thought about painting two different colors, like cream below and teal above. If you're going to get a backsplash over your counters anyway, cooking won't affect that part of the wall below the rail. Since you mentioned Danny and Carlo's wall, do you like that green they have on their other walls? I think it looks great w/ the red, so that's another option.
The Ralph Lauren Vintage Collection (home Depot) would look Fantastic! .. This looks like a vintage Kitchen .. Add a Wide Potrack www.Potrackgalore.com has great prices.. And Bam! you've got something cute. Ohh i believe that Costplus World Market has great Islands at Decent Prices.
hope this helps

I'm also loving the idea of red & teal(-ish) blue. But I'm thinking that a very pale shade would work well (with the red room) and still keep the area light and airy. I instantly thought of a color I remember seeing somewhere in the apt therapy archives. After a few minutes of searching, I found it! I'm envisioning something close to the color used in the fireplace nook in this apt:

(4th & 5th photo from the top)
Hope this inspires you. Good luck!
I think tiffany's blue / green would look really beautiful.
Oh, dang. My link got cut off. Click on my name to see what I just went on and on about.
Or, if you think the blue might be TOO cool against the red, you could always go with a yummy camel or khaki color (as seen in that same mini tour, photos 6 & 7).
Thanks everybody!
1. I should have mentioned, the vinyl floor went out. We are sticking with the darkened (by 40 years of black mastic) oak hardwood floors.
My thoughts so far--
Chocolate brown-- love it but afraid my husband will freak. He's getting a little weary of my chocolate brown addiction.
Beige/khaki -- I love neutrals, but wanted to give a "real" color a shot. This may be my fall back plan.
Teal and pale aqua -- I love the idea of teal but worry it will be too vivid for hubby. I love the pale aqua, but it is the color we painted our bedroom.
Thanks for the food for thought. This reinforces my original ideas of warm neutrals or a pale blue.
I hope to have after photos soon!
If you've got a red dining room, why not a red accent wall in the kitchen? We went with khaki walls generally, but the windowed wall is a gorgeous red. Supposedly red's an appetite stimulant so maybe it can also be a source of culinary inspiration!
All I know is that I hated our kitchen until the red came in -- now I can live with it (at least until I completely gut the entire unit!).
I agree with the red accent wall, it looks like the room right through the kitchen door is red, continue that wall w/the windows in the kitchen in that same red or possibly the next lightest shade of that same color then maybe go with a satin gray (and if you dont hate faux) mix the gray with the cream color you like doing either venitian plaster or a wash technique that basically "seemlessly" blends the colors together. if you choose to do this though I have found that doing lung strokes when washing the colors together will look better it will also continously draw the eye up & down to make the room feel bigger good luck
