Not very inviting. So, I picked up a new set of chairs a neighbor was selling on the sidewalk. But now, the new chairs--with their various squatty shapes, dimensions, and surfaces--seem too...Ewok (to continue the Star Wars analogy). They're more open and inviting but also much less tidy.
At this point, I'm open to selling both sets on Craigslist in favor of something that is both sleeker and friendlier (C-3PO?), but I don't know what that would be.
Maybe I should just keep the Storm Troopers? Or try to spruce up the Ewoks? Either way, I've got to get rid of some of these chairs before they start to form an alliance against me.
Help me, Apartment Therapy, you're my only hope!

Shaw's Original Fir...
I say Ewoks! They match the rest of the warm wood in your room.
I like the first one its a more cleaner look, I think the other chairs just look very heavy for the space. Storm troopers had white helmets where do you see that in the chairs, lol.
I say sell the Ewoks (boring) and keep the Storm Troopers for now (more interesting) while you stay on the lookout for chairs you LOVE...it will be worth the wait, it ALWAYS is ;)
I think you should take the second set, check that they are sturdy and not shaky. Go to your paint store, buy a color to your liking - I would choose bright orange, but just my taste - you might hate the idea and paint the wooden chairs - you need to sand first and all that - find instructions on the web how to do that. If that seems too much for you, keep the ikea.
it really depends on the styles and colors in the rest of your space.
I think the 2nd set of chairs covers the cool base of the table where the first set show it a bit more. I'd stick with something with light legs that won't distort the view of the table base.
Hmmm.... To me it seems as if the table itself doesn't quite go with the place. Of course I can only see a little bit of it, but the ewok chairs match what I can see of the sofa and that sidetable/cabinet thing, the table doesn't.
That said, I like the Ikea chairs with the table, they're both more modern and clean lined.
I vote for storm troopers.
My vote is to paint the storm troopers a color...I find the ewoks a bit busy for the table (looking at the amount of leg action)...but that's just me. Choose, you must...Good luck!
Neither. I think they're both a little too heavy and blocky for the table. Perhaps a chair that's a little curvier and with a more 'open' design would work better, like Herman Miller's DCM chair.
For now, keep the Storm Troopers. Paint them white or a bright color, if you wish. Resell the Ewoks and save up to buy some C-3POs later, maybe the Globus chair at DWR if you want to go really literal with the sci-fi theme: http://www.dwr.com/product/furniture/dining/chairs/globus-chair-plastic-stainless.do?sortby=ourPicks
My vote is with the storm troopers. I think those chairs look fine with the table as they appear in the photo. As has been noted, we can't see the surrounding area to get an overall sense of color and room proportion, but from what I can see, the storm troopers look better to me and the chairs complement the table.
You may want to do a google or yahoo image search for the table and see what chairs others have used. There are a lot of options for chairs for the burke table.
I like the Ewoks, with the addition of some chair cushions to add a little color.
I vote storm troopers too. If your main concern with those is that the area doesn't look inviting, there are other ways to cozy up the space without changing chairs. More art on that wall, maybe a rug (although it's hard to tell from the pics whether a rug would work), some more textured stuff as a centerpiece, or a pendant lamp, etc. I think the combination of the floor wooden shelf/side table next to the couch the Ewok chairs become this big block of dark wood that overwhelms the white table so it just looks like a tiny white disk floating in space. If you painted the Ewoks white or added some bright/light cushions or something, that would be mitigated. But the Storm Troopers look pretty good as is.
I'm all for storm troopers too.
And thank you for making me laugh so hard. Storm troopers chair garding the Death Star, I love that !
I vote Ewok. The warmth of the chairs contrast well with the coolness of the table.
Also, the Ewok chairs go well with the rolling wooden book case, soft sofa & warm wood floors you've got in the background. The whole look seems more organic & collected over time.
I think the storm trooper chairs seem too cold & modern for the space. I also think it looks very "Ikea"
It seems like you like the Ewok chairs better, too maybe?
Oh yeah, "strom trooper"?
I vote Ewok. They have an honest texture and history that is a good counterpoint for a table that is a) white and b) a knock-off.
The storm trooper chairs are 3rd generation knock-offs -- my father bought some just like them in a grocery store (sorry, but I *really* dislike those storm troopers -- great description btw!)
Keep the Ewoks for now until you find chairs that understand the binary language of moisture vaporators.
What about wookie? Get some high-back rattan chairs?
From me, the question-asker:
Thanks so much to all of you for your insightful comments! And thanks to AT for providing this great venue for constructive feedback.
I know that the information conveyed in the pictures is very limited, and you all have proven that you can insightfully discern a lot from a little.
While the votes have been mixed, I actually find myself agreeing with all of comments. Which is, obviously, both good and bad when trying to make a decision. I tend to appreciate contrast--warm and cool, old and new, hard and soft--and it becomes a challenge for me, with limited skills, to combine these diverse qualities in my home with any sort of cohesion. But you all contribute the inspiration and guidance I need to keep trying new things.
So, thanks again, all you Jedi Masters.
Also, since you all were kind enough to answer my question, I would be remiss not to answer yours!
HollyinDC: I do sometimes like the Ewoks better. And other (fewer) times I like the Storm Troopers better. For different reasons, of course.
msjessiemeghan: That's funny because I just showed my significant other these chairs: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90155790 the other day. I've been thinking rattan, but he hates rattan. Luckily, he doesn't think these are too rattan, but I'm concerned they're too Ikea. Either way, I love the thought of them being Wookies. So perfect!
Have you considered a leather chair? or a classic MCM design? West Elm has these:

"What about wookie? Get some high-back rattan chairs?"
love it.
keep the storm troopers - get rid of the ewoks.
You might consider paint or fabric for the previous set- the new chairs hide the lines of the table pretty effectively, and they look a bit granny. World market has a few chairs that might work, including some pretty inexpensive knockoffs of the originals..
kimg924: I like those West Elm chairs. Esp the oval-backed ones. They're definitely under consideration.
Go the Ewoks. They are warmer, the shapes are more complementary to the table, and they match the bookcase in the background.
The stormtroopers, being clones, look like every other modern chair punted out of IKEA.
The Wookie idea is the best. With perhaps the Ikea sheepskins on the seat. But I must say, 70 bucks for Ikea crap? Go to the flea market, haunt craigslist for better wicker.
