I don't really see this as an eyesore....You need a shower curtain in a pattern that might break up the colors in the room while still using them in a constructive way. I really do like the green and think it's charming.
Oooh, I see potential for a Morrocan/tropical paradise!! Take a look at some of the picture from the recent Morrocan bathroom posts for inspiration. Jewel tones are all the rage, so you could play that up (without letting it get out of control colorful).
The best way to de-emphasis a color scheme you don't like is to work WITH it. For your shower curtain go with a green one (or at least a color on the cool side of the spectrum). Paint the vanity black. Use similar color curtains. Add black bathmats and cool colored towels.
To make those colors work
I would get a shower curtain similar to this:
http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&navAction=jump&id=17615717&search=true&isProduct=true&parentid=SEARCH RESULTS&color=018
and hang some abstract art.
maybe paint that dresser with the black top white too.
I could see some miniature orchids (either magenta or the dancing ladies in yellow) in a modern black pot/planter going beautifully with the green and black tile.
Rose pink, magenta, deep lavender are the colors to explore here.
Paint the walls a light teal color or 2 or 3 shades lighter than the tile and use white towels, shower curtain and bath mat. We have a yellow/black bathroom and a dark green/medium green bathroom and keeping it simple makes it look clean and retro/modern.
I don't see it as an eyesore either. I like the tile.
that tile is beautifully vintage..dont you dare paint it!Just needs to be cleaned up a bit....
Yes, I say embrace the green. I'd paint the walls and cabinets white (can't tell if they are from the pic) and add chrome and glass. The slight green hue of glass will compliment the green tile and give an ocean-y feel. The worst thing I see is that hideous fake marble sink top. I wonder what you could do with that?
I love this tile. I want it.
At least your tub isn't green ;)
Tile is not bad at all. I agree with a few comments up. Paint the walls white. Paint the cabinets white. White shower curtain. I even like a little black detail in the shower curtain (i like the urban outfitters one from above or even one with a little bit of a black stripe or border.) Or all white is great too.
I also say get rid of the hideous fake marble. If you are in a rental I don't know if you can replace it, but lowes has a cheap 70.00 plain white sink top. Could be a cheap fix that your landlord might like?
I think the green tiles are charming, they remind me of the 1930's house I grew up in. :)
Agree that the tile won't be too awful with lots of white to counter-balance. I second the call for white walls, shower curtain, towels, and I like the idea for moroccan-ish accents, like a dark wood soap dish. Replace the sink op with a plain white one if you can.
I made a similar fix in our bathroom-- we have deep brown marble tile everywhere in our bathroom, and although it's actually quite beautiful my husband hated it. However, once we put up a white fabric shower curtain and hung some white towels, with bright green, yellow and dark wood accents (in a soap dish, a vase, and a painting), he decided he liked it!
It's really not bad at all. I would say get a black and white damask shower curtain, and try if you can to replace that marble countertop. I second the suggestion to decorate with green glass.
LOVE the tile!! Just do something to the rest of the bathroom!
BTW, I painted my bathroom the same color of the tiles -- I did a kind of 'French' theme...
I love this tile, too! Seconding the suggestions for purply pinks. Very St. Tropez?
I also love this tile and I'm so jealous! My bathroom tile is just boring white. I would stick with white or light ivory walls with black and white shower curtain like a previous poster recommended. I also vote to replace the sink and floor though. Maybe white towels with black trim?
http://condo-blues.blogspot.com/2008/06/inherited-bathroom-dcor-that-works.html
poodle skirt curtain? cute. xo
Think of it as "jade", maybe you will like it more!
I agree to change the fake marble. I got a granite counter in black at Home Depot with a new sink attached, not expensive, and it wuld make the black trim seem very new. If your landlord won't object!
I'd suggest white accessories and walls. A stained glass window (Overstock.com has a nice peacock design, for instance) hanging over your window would add color and work with the tile.
Go with a black and white shower curtain and crisp white towels. I love black and white mixed with jade green, so pretty. Work with it, not against it.
I would take those tiles in a heartbeat!
Is it really the tiles that are an eyesore, or is it perhaps the plastic fake marble countertop? If there is any likelihood of remodeling, I would start there. With a new countertop and a nice sink and faucet, plus a new shower curtain and bath rug to cover some of the floor (which doesn't look as pretty) in one of the suggested schemes above would probably go a looooong way to making this bathroom more pleasing to you.
If all else fails, just try to tell yourself it's "funky," and decorate with whatever oddball kitsch comes to mind. It's just a bathroom--it's a small room and you can get away with doing something wild and crazy in there.
Eyesore? I would love to have this tile, especially since what I do have is hideous 1960 pink AND pink fixtures. Ugh.
embrace the green. I would keep it fresh and modern with white linens/mat/shower curtain, perhaps in a nice texture or with a bit of black trim--but just a little.
Make sure the bath mat is large and luxurious and that any visible hardware is unified (all shiny or all matte) and incorporate just a few details like a vase or jar, a picture in a black frame, a wall-mounted shelf for extra towels. Definitely paint any cabinets and walls a crisp white, and if at all possible, at all possible cost, lose that vanity top/counter.
The tile rocks - ROCKS! It's the sink counter that is the eyesore. Dream scenario: (I know it's probably a rental where these are pipe dreams) paint the walls a greenish grey, get a black toilet seat, paint the cabinet black, and put in a dark grey countertop for the sink.
Wow, I am so jealous of your color! Teal is my favorite. And our rental apartment is color-free as they come. :( I WISH for a teal bathroom, overwhelming though it may be! Keep everything bright and graphic, and add a more delicate shape or print somewhere...something flowing, organic...LOVE the orchid idea.
Actually love this tile. Agree with suggestion to paint the walls a pastel version of the tile color (stark white might be too much of a contrast), and accent with white, black and chrome accessories. Think 30s Deco, but a little more modern. Second the suggestion to replace the sink. If there are any salvage places in your area, you might be able to find something from the period for less than you'd pay new. Maybe price it out first and talk to your landlord (take a few pix to show him/her what you'd like). If s/he's amenable, but doesn't want to pay the full amount, maybe you could share the cost. Can't tell from the photos, but the dresser looks like it might be too large--if it isn't, consider painting it black. White towels.
If you can afford it, consider changing out the lighting to something like this:

or something a little more fanciful (and pricey)

absolutely, don't touch the tiles! it looks great, the vanity is an eyesore, you didn't tell if this was a rental or condo, if a condo I would spend money to get a pedestal sink either very contemporary like a Duravit with chrome legs or a classic one which are readily available. this will do wonders
If you have to keep that vanity paint that one in a color that works with the green, could be a mustard or a shiny green black, the counter you cannot touch, and then a cheery fabric shower curtain with liner to warm things up.
Really the tiles are great, painting will look crappy!!
Personally, that's one of my favorite colors, and I think the problem is the combination with the warm color on the walls and especially the vanity top. I think replacing the vanity is a much easier job than the tile. I would look for inspiration pieces that incorporate the teal and black to use as a base for a color scheme. I think teal, black and white would be a lovely color scheme. See here: http://www.ariellewalrath.com/exhibita/2009_01_01_archive.html
This is also a good color search tool: http://www.gpeters.com/color/color-schemes.php
There is special tile paint that you could use to paint it, if you really can't make it work with your style.
Just embrace it. I have a pink and black tiled bathroom from the 20's and it has some detail in an aqua green. Really, just own it. Keep your accessories simple, bump it up with orange or pink in moderation. Our towels are black and white as all are most of our wall pictures (one has orange and gold). Chrome and/or brushed nickel will look nice in there. You'll do fine. Just go for period pieces, if you can.
broken record here, but i LOVE this tile.
I, on the other hand, have seriously UGLY tile in my (otherwise gorgeous) new apartment.
Any of you wonderful readers have ideas on playing up pale yellow tile maroon accent tile????? colors? fixes?
my sister has a bathroom with almost identical tile! she has white walls and all of the accessories are vintage flamingos. there's a flamingo mirror, pink and green fiesta and other vintage pottery, and flamingo figurines. this is her second bathroom, so there's just the tub, no shower. with pink towels, it looks really cool and plays up the vintage quality without being cheesy.
Had to laugh when I saw this and started reading the comments. Erika - you may not feel it, but you're so lucky to have gotten stuck with one of the best color combos lurking in older bathrooms!
I've had to deal with eye-searing pink, orange, and yellow with brown dots (yes! the brown dots are part of the tile, not painted on or something) in bathrooms. Talk about sins of the fathers being visited upon the children... :D
Sorry to be redundant, but I like it too. I actually remember being in a (1930's?) home with similar tile, when I was like 10 years old and thinking, "That's cool." (And that was in the 80's before vintage was cool.)
I agree with all the black and white ideas. My friend has a similar bathroom, but the tiles are pink and black. She has cute modern black and white curtains, and they look great. (My bathroom is all beige, or dirty white, so I envy you.)
How lucky you are!! We're actually looking at buying an apartment that has a bathroom similar to this.
Other readers are right, a lick of bright white paint will make all the difference. A new mixer and sink top/pedestal would also help.
A white shower curtain, maybe with some black detail.
Maybe even, if the budget extends, replace the (what looks like) venetian blind with a simple black roller blind for a sleeker look. A few white flowers would look pretty on the window sill.
Not sure what's above the sink, but a big, chrome and/or black framed mirror would probably look good.
Have a look around at second hand stores for some simple nudes to hang on the wall (if that's your thing), or even some Japanese prints.
Work with it!!
Buy a black glass light fitting, chandelier or something art deco to suit the space, some beautiful luxury black towels and some black glass jars for all your bits and pieces.
Buy a lovely cut glass mirror!
And now doubt your tub will be traditional caste iron, so you can enjoy long hot baths! I made the mistake of replacing my caste iron tub with a modern plastic molded one. What a mistake! the tub gets cold in about 10 min in winter.
Make the most of it and enjoy what you have!
I would LOVE to have that green tile in my rental bathroom instead of the beige that is currently in there. I don't see this as in eyesore. Work with what you got. I say put a nice, long shower curtain up, which will block a lot of the tile, then accesorize!
I loved the comment about Moroccan influences. I think that could be wonderful.
I also like the idea about orchids and using magenta and other jewel colors.
It might not be the style you prefer, but I am sure you could make it quite stylish and good looking if you use what you've got!
Add my name to the list. I LOVE that tile!!! I agree with everyone who said to paint the walls white and go deco. Lots of white with black accents. Change that horrible "marble" counter. Switch it out for something black. You NEED a black counter. With the white walls, it'll look awesome. And then frame something (like a black and white photo, or a black and white print) in a black frame. Don't forget to get rid of that wood dresser. If that's not possible, paint it white, like the walls, and change out those Shaker knobs. And one day, when you're ready to really redo the bathroom, KEEP THE WALL TILES. Start thinking of them as "peacock." The only thing I would change, honestly (aside from the counter) is the floor tile. I can't see exactly what it is, but it looks beige and square. You could probably tile right over that with white hexagons. Done!
the cure... I recently moved into a tudor style house that has the same teal green tile with black trim. I painted the walls a historic BM gray and it completely nutralized the green tile. I did a white shower curtain and black towels. Do this, and it will looked like you planned the tile all along. Paint the ceiling the same color too.
Good luck!!
My mom just bought a house built in the 1940's and the bathroom tile had been painted over in white. She spent weeks scouring and sitting in paint remover fumes to get to this look of mint green and black tile that was hidden underneath. Please don't paint it. We painted the walls a very dark charcoal... not quite as black as the actual tile. I painted some artwork to match the color of the tile, added a geometric shower curtain that went with the colors we were going for, and we replaced the sink and its totally retro chic now.
You might like spending some time on Flickr. Search for "green tile bathroom" and check out what other people have done. For example -

I would kill for your bathroom! except for the sink basin! gad!
Its a fab color and I would be working ebay for vintage pottery (bathroom fish, etc) and stuff that matches. You can find lots of inexpensive glass that would look great hanging around as decoration too. I know its kind of unweildy but i would learn to love it and work with it instead of against it.
OMG! Imagine my surprise, as i was surfing trying to find color compliments for my white walls, and its the same colors in my 1930's bathroom. The only difference is my tub area, and toilet area are set back in an archway, giving it somewhat of a moroccan feel. I am trying to get sort of a "house of blues" zen feel...my toilet, tub, and walls are white, but i think i have decided on doing the recessed areas a drab green with plum and gilded gold sponged over it, as i have a huge buddha sitting on the shelf over my toilet, and im going to get a large black framed pic for over the tub, probably something tibetan...the other walls out of the recessed area, im just going to lighten up the green with some white paint and paint over the white walls, there is too much of a contrast, but will leave ceiling and window trim white....if i dont like it i will just paint over...trust me..consider yourself lucky..my last bathroom in the last house was PINK...bleeechhh! good luck!
I've got the same tile color scheme in a bathroom in my 1957 ranch for which I am planning an inexpensive facelift. I'm thinking about somewhat metallic silver paint on the walls and white and chrome fixtures. To put in a new sink I'll have to take out some of the sea green tile, and I am thinking about replacing it with sea green glass tile maybe with some gray or silver mosaic. It'll be my guest bathroom/powder room so I think fluffy fresh white towels will look great! I want white carerra marble but unless Ikea has it, I don't think I'm getting it. Coral orchids would be perfect!
Gotta be honest. I canNOT believe how many people actually like this tile. I have the same gross contrasty aqua/black scheme in mine coop. I hate hate hate it. The place prior to this had pink and black. And the sink, tub and toilet were also pink. What was going through people's minds in the 30's-50's??
My place even had a ratty glass shower door initially. That sucker got torn out immediately. It was so moldy and gross...ick
So, in aqualand. I went with a very simple white. Honey, you need to get rid of that sink. It's terrible. I replaced mine with a white pedestal. I have white walls. white towels, white bath mat (like in a hotel, it lives on the tub and comes off when its needed). I have a hookless white shower curtain. I live it. http://tinyurl.com/24x5y6r
Above the sink, i added a little glass shelf for stuff i don't want to put away. I added three very small (like 3 in deep) shelves above the toilet (in white), to give me a little extra space, but not add anything else to the already over-done design. I like the bamboo accessories... they're neutral enough to work. But now that I'm reading this, I think that some abstract, bold prints would look nice in black simple frames on the wall.
Do you have one of those in-wall hampers? I hate it. I keep stuff I would have kept in the under-sink cabinet in there.
Good luck, my friend. It's tough to live with. But, you'll be ok.
