Q: I have a zebrawood veneer 6-person dining table with chrome legs I’m trying to pair with dining chairs. I have four of the Ikea Olle dining chairs in black (shown above, at left) for the longer sides of the table already, but am torn whether to order the clear Louis Ghost chairs or the black Louis Ghost chairs. Are the black ghost chairs too much black, the clear just enough contrast or…?

Editor: Please let Kay know whether you would go with the black or the clear Ghost Chairs as an accompaniment to the black Olle chairs....thanks!

Nomade Express Slee...
I'd go with the black ones.
Personally, I think the 2 black Louis chairs would look better at the heads of the table, but what's the scratch factor like on them? Like, how susceptible are the chairs to scratching and will they look ugly? The ones I've looked at show scratches and scuffs and that's all I could focus on, rather than the beauty of the chairs themselves.
I bought 2 black Louis-inspired chairs for the ends of my white lacquer table, but they're covered in a pleather-y, padded material. I get the contrast I'm looking for with them, they don't get scuffed, and can be easily wiped down if they get soiled.
I'd go with black. I think mismatched chairs look much tidier in all the same color, unless you're going for a bohemian vibe (which it doesn't seem that you are).
It's a little too much black and white for me (altho you don't say what's in the rest of the room). I would do something crazily else as the ends of the table, such as pale blue or orange Panton chairs, or short upholstered benches. Something with softness that's a bit organic-feeling would echo the zebra pattern and contrast nicely with the more linear Ole chairs.
Black!
I don't love the pairing of the Ikea chairs with the Louis chairs (of either color). Sorry!
I don't really think the ghost chairs go with the Ikea chairs. I know mixing and matching is all the rage, but the Ikea chairs look way too "countryish" for the ghost chairs, imho.
I agree with the above two posts. I love the idea of mixing chairs but these two don't work together.
While I would say black likely my vote is for Clear - because they will work so well in any other room should you need a chair. The odds are good that somewhere along the lines you will drop the IKEA chairs for something else and the clear chairs will go well with whatever you bring along.
Zebrawood table with chrome legs... I don't know if you need to add another material to the mix. I would skip the ghost chairs. Could you post of picture of the table? I think everyone could be more helpful.
I like the idea of something different in black. I'm feeling the Ghost chairs are a little played out...check your thrift and vintage shops...
Neither.
Invest in some comfortable upholstered dining armchairs instead.
Clear!
Let the zebra wood be the star. Don't let any chair backs stand in the way to ruin the show. The clear Ghost chairs are barely "there" and that's what's great about them.
Otherwise, consider benches or cubes to sit on.
In this case, I'd go with the black chairs.
Get the Smoke Grey ones.
Get the clear ghost chairs as an investment (I agree that the black ones will be harder to match with future decor), and then get rid of the Ikea chairs altogether. It's unfortunate, but I don't think they will look right together in any context. Even if all the chairs are black, the Ikea chairs are still way too country looking.
First, I think, just my opinion, that the whole point of the Ghost Chair is it is best used clear.
With a black table, expecially zebrawood, I would think this would compliment it better. It's going to be a very dark read if you use black chairs.
As for scratches, black would show EVERY little ding, scratch and dust. If you entertain a lot, perhaps you should consider a more durable chair, or just surrender to polishing them.
Great chair either way, but like with the iconic '64 Fronzoni work, now they're offering colors. I think Fronzoni would be spinning in his grave at the thought. Repro is one legitimate route, neato-updatio for just marketing is not.
Sorry I got off the subject! I'm still waiting on the Fronzoni table that takes forever to get to the states from Italy.
I think you should compromise on the smoke gray ones too.
The Ikea ones are too country--replace those first!
I'm going to say go with black....just because of the Zebra...
:))))

I think a Kartell Victoria would look better with your chairs than a Kartell Louis.

Um, zebrawood is not black. Or black and white.
oh my gosh! i sent this question in so long ago, i already got the chairs!
i ended up going with the clear, mainly because the space the table resides in isn't exactly spacious, so i figured the clear would offer some practical use (detract from too much black) as well as add visual interest. i'm actually crazy happy with getting the clear ones - it not only makes the entire ensemble very open and visually interesting, but i just installed a black cylindrical mesh/chrome and crystal chandelier above that echos the black/clear/chrome color scheme. it looks amazing!
and also patrick (the other one) is right - zebrawood is not black nor black/white. it's aptly named due to the appearance of the grain rather than the colors.
Neither. They are too trendy and ubiquitous for the price, not to mention they are horribly uncomfortable and scratch if you so much as look at them funny.
I never used to be attracted to those chairs until I sat in one. I found it so (surprisingly) comfortable, which made them much more appealing :-)
