My new apartment is unfinished; first year of law school crept up on me, my time, and my creativity! As you can see from the attached pictures, the apartment looks drab and lifeless. Help!
..With two main things:
1. Seating on the left side (facing TV)
2. Wall/other accessories
Note: Include a pic of your problem and your question gets posted first.

That room has great basics that all look like they can stay and are in good shape, coordinate well, etc. To polish it off, add some well-chosen accessories... I would say a good place to start is show off some things you love. Start with your personality. Create a focal point with something you love and take it from there.
I would infuse the room with punches of orange, in pillows, graphic/vintage framed art for the walls, a rug etc. I would also move that bookshelf to the corner of the room to the right of the TV, and instead of placing it flat against the wall, cut off the corner at a 45 degree angle to both walls. Fill it up with some books! And/or interesting objects.
Also, think about switching the tv table with the coffee table...I think the low tv table would work better as a coffee table. Good luck!
Click on my name to see a very nice example of a khaki wall with white and hot pink accents - very fun!
I think the most obvious thing you're missing is art on the walls! Putting something on the walls will solve 75% of your problem. What kind of art totally depends on your taste - big paintings, prints, framed patterns/wrapping papers/wallpapers. You can do it cheaply and nicely and I think it will add what you're looking for. If you click on my name you can see our livingroom, which has a wall with framed papers on it, but you can buy prints and paintings, etc, cheaply from either a) art students b) beginning artists c) online. Some of my favorite sources online are: www.tinyshowcase.com and www.littlepaperplanes.com
http://designsponge.blogspot.com/ also has a great affordable art guide - look in the side bar.
Buying art can be lots of fun, take your time and find things that you really like.
Good luck!
This is a good one. I'm surprised that there are so few responses so far. Here goes:
1. Cool Chairs (antique lacquer flea-market chairs, or sleek little slipper chairs in an interesting print. just make them unique). This might work better with a smaller sofa/loveseat. Try to arrange the furniture in a way that is conducive to talking. I would aim the sofa towards the windows with chairs arranged in front, facing the sofa (but then, I'm rather rabidly anti-TV - see # 2).
2. Hide the TV in a vintage wardrobe or display it on a taller stand. It looks like all anyone ever does in this room is watch TV. Also, the TV is so low that it makes the proportions of the walls look strange. At first I thought this was a basement apartment because of this effect.
3. Pick an accent color and buy some accessories. I'm thinking deep purple/aubergine. It'd look good with the current color scheme and it's also a little unexpected at this point. I would stay away from orange or red, personally. They're great colors, but wouldn't look especially good with the current wall color and they're a little overdone recently (if you care). Try to incorporate some prints as well, not just solid colors.
4. Get an interesting lampshade. Not white. Not that shape. Tie in with accessories. (Restoration Hardware has nice silk shades in good shapes/colors for a decent price, by the way.)
5. Books on the bookshelf. Also, it's a little awkwardly placed. Hard to tell where it should go w/o seeing the rest of the space, though.
6. Art.
7. We can't really see the windows, but if they don't already have a nice shade (printed roman shades, maybe, or paper shades - I like these and they're dirt cheap) or curtains, get some. No metal slat blinds allowed.
Ah, got that off my chest. Please excuse my punctuation! That all just sort of came out in a rush. Good luck and thanks for being brave enough to post this.
I would use art and light to accentuate different areas of your space. This would make an instant improvement without major expenses.
Consider Roland of California (http://www.rolandsofcalifornia.com/catalog/Wood.html)
dried deocrative wood, you can get a great looking Manzanita bush (has gray and red accents) and hang it with some jute rope on the wall. It really stands out and adds a really unique element to the room.
As far as lights, I would suggest a different variable of light sources spread around the room. A small table lamp, a floor lamp, a shelf lamp, etc. so you can define areas as you use them.....
Daniel - You have a great space and a good start. Are you a first year law student now?? My advice to you is: get to work and study!!! (I'm a lawyer.) It's already November. Take practice exams. Decorate your space after your finals are over, and don't let anything distract you. That said, I really like this simple chair: http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/collection.do?method=get&id=377902&cat=26
And I like the idea of punches of orange and green. Also, some ceramics and books in your bookcase would be nice. Good luck! (I have to go back to work now...thanks for the distraction...)
^ that's funny stuff. Just seeing this post now due to my "brown and sea green room" google search. I'd offer ideas, but since this was 5 years ago, I imagine it looks different.
