Q: I just moved into a new studio apartment and am reminded daily of the eye sore that is my heating unit (larger photo below), which is front and center when entering the apartment. My fireplace structure and mantle remain, however the vent has been covered up and replaced with a gas heater which sticks out into the main room (studio=living/dining/bedroom) like a sore thumb. And to make matters worse, the heater doesn't work and needs to be repaired.
I have supplemental heating, so am not worried about using this unit for its intended purpose and therefore am desperate to cover it.
It sticks out about 18 inches deep, so I'm worried about putting a fireplace screen in front of it, as this too would stick out. I'm hoping for a multipurpose cover, which could be used for storage/magazine/book holder, etc. I was thinking of putting a dark wicker/teak basket in front and cutting out the back to slide over the unit, but even those are $80+.
Any and all suggestions are welcome and I'm hoping your creative readers can help me cover this thing!
