Good Questions: The $500.00 Nursery

Sep 28, 2007

David has a dilemma: "My job transferred me with very little notice to a new city, and we moved into our new house a month ago. Our baby is due the first week in November, and my poor wife is too exhausted by the move to get excited about putting together a baby's room in the new house. Her sister and I are cooking up a scheme to get her out of the house for a few days, and we want to put together a nursery and surprise her with it when she comes home.

The room is painted in Ralph Lauren "island tan", and since we don't own the house, we cannot paint it. The floors are medium finish oak, and there are great blinds in the room, but other than that, it is totally empty. What would you do, if you had a budget of $500, a weekend, 2 design-challenged adults, a wife who really needs a nice nursery, and did I mention we don't know the sex of the baby?"

We love a challenge! Below is a larger version of our style tray for this project. If the room has to remain tan, work around it! White furniture really pops against tan neutrals, and the fabric is cute and incorporates the brown without looking to 'boy'ish. The dog print is by Sion Lee - we love his stuff, and it adds another dog element into the room, without being all 'matchy matchy' about it. We would make crib linen out of the fabric, and also grab some lumber, nail together a simple cornice, slipcover it via a staple gun and the dog fabric, and hang it up over your windows, to soften the blinds. Links to everything, and a final budget, below the photo.

Hemnes Dresser, from Ikea ($149.99).
Delta European Changing Table, in white ($89.88). We would change out the knobs to match the dresser.
Delta Seville 3-in-1 crib, in white ($98.88).
• Crib/curtain fabric: A Girl's Best Friend. $8.95 a yard x 5 yards ($44.75).
Handwoven Hemp/leather rug. ($69.99)
Artist Sion Lee's Super Dog, in small ($19.98).
Wide Mat Frame ($29.59)

Total? $503.06 - your $500 budget, plus one large mocha from Starbucks.

AT Readers, it is your turn! What would you do with a $500.00 nursery budget?
