Good Questions: Is a Free Mattress Worth Shipping?

Hello AT,

A cathartic deep cleaning and the realization that the computer had to get out of the bedroom is letting me upgrade to a Queen size mattress. A good friend tells me she's moving, and she's not bringing an almost new-good quality- Queen Size mattress/box spring that has been living in her guest's mine for the taking. She and the mattress are in Naples, Florida; I'm in NYC.

Is it worth it for me to ship this thing? Cost? Who do I call? Thanks, for any direction. -w (Pic: Edmund Dulac)

Dear W,

A free, new mattress is a great thing, but it's hardly free when it's 2,000 miles away. You could easily call 1800mattress and have them deliver a new one to your door within 8 hours for @500 (good quality).

So, what will it cost to ship that one North and how good a mattress is it? We don't know much about mattress shipping costs, but one call to UPS would give you some idea.

Also, say your friend's mattress is an expensive TempurPedic or a Hastens? These get very pricey and it may be reasonable to ship one of these rather than buying one new.

We suspect that it's not worth it, but we could be wrong.

Anyone else??
