Good Questions: Best Tatami Bed Source?

Hello AT,

My husband-to-be and I want to furnish our love nest with a tatami-mat platform bed and a Japanese futon mattress, like this one from haikudesigns.com. We can’t find such a thing in stores near us, so we’ll have to order one off the internet. Can you point us in the direction of a trustworthy, high-quality online vendor of bed, mat, and futon?

Why not HaikuDesigns? They seem to get a pretty good rap, even though it does seem as if some folks from the company might be writing in...;-).

I just purchased that exact bed frame from Dream on Futon (http://www.futondreams.com/) which is a different one than posted earlier. They are on the West Coast in Bellingham, WA and have been around for at least 12 plus years that I can remember.

The bed frame itself is great. The slats to support the mattress are made out of a higher quality wood than I've seen before and it overall, the bed has some weight to it. Be aware that there are two different color woods for the frame (where I bought mine). The lighter of the woods is reddish in color while the ebony wood is a bit darker but not black. All the pieces go together very smoothly, a few bolts but mostly just wooden dowels and interlocking beams.

While I haven't ordered a bed from Chopa Imports (www.chopa.com), I did order tatami mats from them, and was very pleased with their service. Prompt, professional, and friendly - and their tatami mats are of excellent quality, so I'd be optimistic about the bedframes they carry, too.
