It's really hard to find good, modern looking planters at anything approaching an affordable price. I've been trying for years. IKEA briefly carried some nice planters in some kind of dark aggregate plastic material, but they sold out within weeks. You'd think someone would notice there's a demand . . .

You can get commercial units, designed for lobbies and such, but those are outrageously expensive.

I am so upset now too because I was about to order these. I only got this catalog 2 weeks ago so I figured I had the time still. I am wanting these for my front porch and have not seen anything else I liked, and such a great price!

Yeah, those are SUPER cheap. I went on a big hunt for something similar last year, but for terrace use so this type of shiny finish was not an option. I ended up finding similarly contemporary square metal planters with a black finish at Jamali, and have been very happy with them, but in the size I needed (around 4 feet wide by maybe 13" deep) they were over $150 apiece I think.

If you are in NYC I would just go to Jamali and take a look, they have a ton of contemporary choices and there is another place across the street with additional options. They are very conveniently located in the quickly-vanishing "flower district" near Chelsea.

IKEA has galvanized steel bins (I believe MUCK is the name, they're not on their website but they definitely still have them) in a variety of sizes that I've seen used as planters. The sides are slightly slanted, but it's a similar look. They have holes in the bottom (for optional casters) that provide some drainage, but you might need to drill a larger center hole as well.

I was at the Paramus store last weekend, and it looked like they were just starting to stock up on the new garden accessories and such for the season...they tend to sell out quickly, but IKEA is one of my favorite resources for plant pots.

FYI, I just found these SKRIN bins on the IKEA site. They are similar to the MUCK bins I mentioned, but with less variety of sizes. Also, if I recall correctly, the MUCK bins do not have the embossed panels on the sides.

Original Poster here, and I'm glad to hear that other people are as frustrated as I when CB2 told me they weren't available. Thanks for the Jamila suggestion - I checked their site before submitting, and they unfortunately don't have the steel square version, but they have a similar black square planter - at about twice the price. Maybe their store will have more options, but from what I hear, its a tiny place.

Sigh....I knew it was too good to be true...

Argh, I'd have gotten some if I'd known they existed. Planters are so expensive, and even nice-looking pots with good drainage are so hard to find here!

Sheet metal shops will make stainless steel and/or galvanized steel boxes to your specifications. Just by looking at these, they seem like they would be relatively cheap. All you would need to do is provide a drawing (a crude sketch with dimensions is often acceptable). They will ask you things like the gauge of the metal you want, welded or mechanicaly fastened corners, etc. ... but this way you can get exactly what you want.

Hey, those would be my choices, too, P2 - and Jamali really is the best source around here for big planters. I bet they really do have them. One thing I wanted to mention is that these would not be great over the long haul if you put them out in front of a townhouse or brownstone. I have seen a local townhouse that put up a stainless barrier in front. All of the dogs urinate all over it and it looks horrible. Not an issue if you will have them indoors or in a private garden/roof deck. But just a thought.

The Chiasso ones are almost 5 times the price of the CB2 ones. What a ripoff.

Jamali does have them, mostly in small sizes from 3" to 12" square and rectangular.

In defense of CB2, It is not uncommon, and very possible that the supplier that CB2 used for these planters backed out of a supply contract, or couldn't follow through with the supply the goods as was promised. This happens all the time to catalog retailers. It sucks, but it isn't necessarily the retailers fault.

(As a Chicago resident, I don't think they made it to the store either.)

bought a bunch of these a while ago. I knew this was about to happen. Too good to be true. got the 8" and the 12". 4 of each. They look really nice on the entrance and balcony. I wanted to buy a few more for the patio and they were all gone...

cb2 did the same thing to me when they put out their FIRST catalog. i liked a steel cafe table. how can they no longer carry something that's just put out? it's nuts. when i called, they let me order it. then, several weeks later they told me they didn't have it.

Try Evan Peters in LIC..they have a huge warehouse with tons of great planters..their website is www.evanpeters.com...I know they sell to a bunch of landscape designers but they're also open to the public.
