Good Questions: Must See Design Stops in NYC?

My wife and I are coming to NYC today and are huge design freaks. We were wondering what your must-see museums / shops / restaurants are for a short trip in the City? We read your site daily and have since 2004! Thanks in advance to you and your readers!

Guggenheim is undergoing renovations, and though their current show closes tomorrow - it's worth going to see all the scaffolding and stuff.

Future Perfect and Moss. Definately.

I think if you care about architecture at all, it's kind of fun to have a look at the Ellipse Building, also known as the Lipstick Building (from the outside -- it's offices and you probably can't really get in) it's on 3rd Avenue or so around 53rd Street or so. It was designed in order to shut up everybody who wanted a corner window by giving everyone (and yet no one) one. It's like a tall pinched column.

Also have a look at the Hearst Building with its harlequinesque curtain wall, nestled into a turn-of-the-[20th]-century (methinx) vaguely Egyptian-ish kind of situation. I love it.

Philip Johnson's Rockefeller Guest house on 50th street - just down from the Seagrams building...

...much better than the Lipstick building.

For shopping or drooling, High Style Deco on 18th St. btwn 7th & 8th Aves.

many possibilities, but architecture wise, take a walking tour of the meatpacking and see the shops, vitra, dwr, etc and new construction near the highline project.

If it is a lovely day, as I hope it will be, I recommend taking the water taxi to Dumbo and seeing a couple of the vintage stores that popped around there. I just like the feeling of being on a boat around manhattan so I take all my summer guests on that trip!

I second Cooper-Hewitt and Dumbo.
