My suggestions will get progressively worse.

Go to a garden center and pick up a round bistro table - 42" is not too big or heavy for cast aluminum.

Look for a junked dryer, dis-assemble, use the drum as a base.

Pick up one of those huge wire spools and throw it on the top.

I'd sell it, too. For $150 (plus whatever you sell the glass for), you can get an inexpensive but attractive table at a comparable size.

If you do want to keep it, I really like JoeyBrill's suggestion of the bistro table.

Don't sell it, such a thing is not easy to come by these days.

I have been looking at the HEMNES side table, the round one, at Ikea for some time. I like the lines of it, and the exaggerated curves of the legs. I have been thinking of using one as a 2 person dining table, as it is only 30 inches in diameter. If you get the black/brown one, it is made of solid pine, not fiberboard like the white one, and it should support the glass you have. You would just need to by some of those clear rubber rounds to ensure it doesn't slip.

I have a glass round the same size supported on a wine barrel. it's cool if that's your thing. unfortunately, I realized afterwards, it's not my thing. oh well.

I have a top just like this and used it for the "keg table". Keg for a base round glass for the top. classy.

Ikea sells just bases. Glass tables worry me. Or you could get a cool metal outdoor table. The ones made of mesh. If you put a glass top over it you could use it indoors no problem and it'd be something a little different. It's a pretty standard size. There is also this spray that you spray on one side of glass so it looks sort of mirror like on the other side if you wanted to dress it up even more. You can buy it at Michaels.

It's not the most attractive piece of glass, I'd get rid of it for sure. I suggest taking your hundred and fifty bucks and go find yourself a little bargain somewhere with chairs, that you can refinish or paint. Try craigslist.

You can either search all over craigslist in hopes of finding a matching base or throw it away and buy something much better.

you can stack wood (4"x4"?) in alternate directions, = and ||, forming a square base
(doesn't allow leg room, but i did this in our back lot with a glass round and a neighbor's left-over fenceposts; good table for entertaining...holding drinks, bowls.)
saw an Arch Digest designer do this in one of their 5grand apartment re-do spreads a few years ago (yes i can hear the shrieks).

I think that a chrome base is the only way to go.

You could find three pedestals of some kind, bird bath bases, architectural columns, glass blocks, found art, whatever -- and arrange them in a triangle to give maximum support and leg clearance.

Or watch for bargain furniture. I wanted a chrome/stainless and glass breakfast table. I found a table base (with a REALLY ugly wooden top) at a second hand place. I bought the table for $75, had THEM remove and trash the top (it wouldn't fit in my car anyhow) and got a glass round at Pier One (on sale for $50.) Voila! Just takes patience and luck.
