Dear AT,
We are moving into a bigger space soon and want to buy another sofa.
We have a great black leather sofa (and 2 wicker armchairs) and I wanted to know what would look best...

I was thinking about the Ikea Karlstad sofa in the picture, especially because we have quite a few green accents.
Any thoughts or alternative suggestions?
Thanks! Laura

Shaw's Original Fir...
We just scored the 3 seater, Karlstad sofa at Ikea in the clearance section for $299.00 This was approximately half off the regular price. It is comfortable and looks great in the dark gray fabric it came in. We were able to take the arms off the sides in order to fit the sofa into our car. Bring a wrench if you have to do this yourself. I suggest you look in the clearance/as is section first and then go into the show room.
Good luck!
I love that shade of green with wicker and black!
I have IKEA's Karlanda sofa...which preceeded this one and is basically the same and I love it. Very durable and easy to get cleaned for around $30...gotta love removable slip covers! I like that that cushions can be not only rotated, but also flipped, for even wear. My only word of caution is to be careful with the zippers, though they are very durable, still make sure you pull the fabric together as you zipper. It might be worth it to get two slip covers, not because of durability problems, but just for practicality.
It has held up perfectly for about 5 years with two dogs that think its their bed. I also like the height of the armrests and that they're flat so they can serve as a 'side table'.
The only thing I like better about the Karlanda vs the Karlstad is that the Karlanda has three cushions for the seat and back. While the look is less streamlined, I like that no one has to sit on the crack. But that is just a personal thing.
We have had the Karlstad loveseat (in brown) for about a month now. Love it. The fabric feels like it will last forever (I actually have an office chair with a red version). We loved the green and blue version of the Korndal fabric as well. I think the green is actually a little brighter than in the picture though.
We picked up a set of the tapered aluminum legs for $30 to use in place of the included wood legs. Personally, I think it looks better. I think there are a few more leg options, too. Whatever suits your decor.
The arm rests also work nicely for the TV remote while watching TV--no more losing it in the cushions.
The only down side I can think of is that the slip covers took forever to put on. Probably because we're pretty picky about how the seams line up, so there was a lot of tugging and swearing for awhile, but it's all lined up nicely now and won't budge...I hope I don't have to wash the covers any time soon.
I'm dying to buy the fold-out bed version (for guests) of the Karlstad and would also love to hear what any use experiences...
Wait - I'm confused: You already have a black leather sofa and you want another sofa to go with it in the same room?
A Pair of matching sofas or loveseats = Fabulous.
Mismatched Sofas = Not so hot.
Get two matching armchairs instead.
We have the Karlstad with the fold-out bed. I loved it until it broke 3 days after the 90 day warranty/return policy was up. It looks like a relatively easy fix though; the wheel on the track that pulls the bed out doesn't stop where it's supposed to, causing the bed to fall to the floor if you lay on it. We're looking for some sort of stopper to prevent this from happening (it's a tiny space that it falls through). Any ideas??
(Otherwise, I love it!)
ae.woodford- doesn't the karlstad have a 10 year warranty or something?
i am also interested in getting the karlstad- and when looking through the online catalog i remember seeing it marked with the 10 year warranty.
we want the sofabed version because we don't have a guest room. is it comfortable as a regular sofa? most sofa beds i've sat on have uncomfortable seats.
does anyone have the white covers? how do those hold up to washing/bleaching?
i can't really picture your living room, but i have seen the black/green/wicker combo in rooms, and i think it looks nice. kinda earthy/organic-modern
As someone who has alwasy been wary of IKEA furniture when I saw the Karlstad I loved the shape so much that I decided to give it a try. I've had the white one nearly a year now & I'm really happy with how it's held up. I haven't had to wash the cover yet as you have to disassemble the sofa to remove it and on a day to day basis I mostly keep it covered. Of course, for guests I remove the cover & its still looking white! Before it's one year anniversary I will have to clean it. Now that IKEA has a new slipcover that I can put over it, I'll try it. It's a great deal & I get tons of compliments.
I've also been considering the Karlstad for some time. My problem is that there is no possible way to get a "normal" sofa into the living room. It would have to be completely taken apart. Doris, you mentioned that you could take the arms off, do you think the back could easily be removed too?
I think it would look fine with a black leather sofa, so long as they weren't placed at right angles. You'd have to tie a few other items into the color scheme to make it work, like pillows or lamps. I really like that green color.
is the green of this sofa as sage-like as it seems? i like it as pictured online but (online colors being less than accurate and all) i would hope that it isn't any more saturated a color than what i see here...
I have been thinking about getting this sofa for a while so I'm glad that there are such positive reviews. Horray!
A tip/rumor I head from an employee at the Emerville Ikea in California ... he said that they are having a sofa sale in May. I'm going to wait until then just in case it's true.
I know someone who has this sofa, and it doesn't look as 'sage' in person, but it is still a nice colour.
re: Karlstad Sofa Bed
There is a serious product design flaw in the rolling track. When the bed unfolds it has to reach the end of the track. At that point the middle of the sofa bed is resting on simply the wheel inside the gap between the track and the wheel stop. This causes all the weight to push against the wheels, warping the plastic of it and falling through the gap.
I can't think of any fixes other than extending the track to fully support the weight or making a bigger wheelstop. It doesn't seem like other option is really possible though.
I don't recommend this product to anyone.
Did anyone ever end up purchasing the white covers? We purchases the 2 seater & chaise add on in the light blue, but then acquired an adorable doggie (and envision some toddlers coming onto the scene). The light blue didn't hold up well after adopting "Frankie", whom we have allowed to jump onto the couch.
Thinking of replacing w/ the white as they could be bleached and also maybe treating w/ scotchguard....Thanks!
