I agree with the Navy Blue or Grey.

As much as I'm not a fan of this kind of vintage sofa, I must say that I think your husband should let you paint navy blue! Navy and yellow go so well together, and in combination with the wood floors I think it would just look really sophisticated. With such a bold color and pattern I feel like you need something on the walls that contrasts with it a lot, and navy would definitely do that.

I agree with the above, but don't hesitate to place a few yellow acessories around the room to hold everything together, and keep the sofa from looking like a loner.

i think maybe the dark colors you mentioned is the wrong direction. I would consider something vibrant to go with the bold golden sofa.
Some might not agree, but i would look into purples, magentas, violets, etc.
the sofa also would cool with grass green walls and maybe some monochromatic green tones elsewhere in the room.

I think that a nice grey would look great with that sofa. Yellow and grey are such a great combination right now and then you could accent the room with navy blue...

How about aqua blue?

I'd lean toward a grey with a lavender cast to it.

I agree with jacks above, a nice light grey or grey/blue would look sophisticated without being overwhelming, it would lend itself to deeper accent colors, and it's probably an easier sell to the hubby. If you get bored you can always go for navy later, but in the midst of a new house consensus is better - plus you can use your compromise to leverage something else you want out of your husband later!

Cobalt blue - deep, rich, vibrant and will make that sofa pop!

I think a warm, light grey could work really well. I might also go with a golden wheat colored paint as the color would rest somewhere in between the colors represented in your couch. If anything, I'd create a palette that doesn't so much contrast with your couch as help it sit back a bit in the overall picture.

I agree that cobalt blue or a well chosen aqua/turquoise will play up the acid yellow in the sofa for a bit of jazz. In fact for old eyes like mine I think this is for sure the way to go, otherwise, I am afraid it reminds me of watching the "the courtship of eddy's father" while babysitting.

Navy blue would really make that sofa stand out. I think it would look really sharp. But if you want a more muted combination, either a grey or a cool green would also work.

I like Navy or dark grey or either color with a hint of violet - great pop. If you need to go lighter I would to a cream or golden yellow color - I just can't visualize light gray. And hey, walls can always be painted over - if hubby can't imagine it that's no reason not to give it a try. When we moved in our dining room went through 3 color changes and our bedroom went through 2.

A rich vanilla! Sher Will makes a gorgeous color called Fresh Cream. It's a very rich, warm tone... would really set that sofa off nicely!

I like the idea of a very light, very soft grey. Navy or charcoal would be dramatic, but overdone. Why not paint the walls white, and use navy accent pillows? The couch is fun and kistchy, but it would be too easy to go overboard.

Paisleystone, the dig against the apartment in "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" was unnecessary. Tom Corbett's place was stylish and understated.

I just painted my living room wall a saturated teal (Benjamin Moore "Caribean Blue Water") and I've been thinking now how much it would look good with a yellow/gold couch in front of it. Maybe you could try something along these lines?

Has anyone said dark brown? Whatever that dark brown thing is in the picture, the couch looks nice against it. Unless your hardwood floors are dark brown.

I know!! Last month's Domino had a peacock palette featured, and your couch is the perfect yellow. Maybe not all of it, but you might get some inspiration.

Gray and that shade of yellow look so nice together. Although, I wouldn't go dark gray.. I'd do a lighter gray. but not light gray. Like a medium gray.

I vote for dove grey, white woodwork and bright yellow accents throughout the room.

this is a challenge and fun!..I ended up def. deciding the cream..french it up!..light..with the grey in there somewhere:silk pillows with the lemon/gray going on..glitz, but in the mode of paris and whimsy!..Navy is just bringing the look in a direction of ...i don't know..seems gloomy?

industrial instead of soothing with these colors, don't do navy, that's just way to dark. Stick with light to medium toned blue greys.

Also get rid of those end pillows and get 2 accent pillows in a
grey, blue, white, or black and white stripe.
Stay classy and simple, that will help anchor the pattern and letting your mod pop.

Well it could be a good thing to keep it I agree. As a fashion designer I always have a problem with yellow but in an interior it could go both ways. The main thing you have to consider is not the wall color but how you are going to accessorize the room. A good color is dark mauvy grey as a color compliment but the rest of the room has to harmonize. You could find a sideboard and paint it the same yellow and put it against another wall. Just do one wall dark then the others white, maybe a pale yellow stripe and watch out for carpet colors!! a color scheme like this needs wooden flooring, preferably dark and maybe a mauve based rug. You could hang a large gold mirror above the sofa against the dark wall and be careful of the other walls as regards pictures, maybe a wall of family photos in small frames , maybe over the yellow sideboard. You could also paint some odd chairs in off white and tie on some coordinating small pads. I like the sofa and it could work well, after all comfortable sofas are expensive and this one must be good quality if it still looks good after this time. Good luck, Stephanie

So I was just checking out some old AT posts for inspiration when I saw this and realized. . . hey! That's my great - grandma's house!! I know this post is old, but I hope you will check it because I want to thank you for taking good care of her house (I know it was a real fixer-upper, but also a real gem). She lived there for over 100 years and truly loved it. I hope by now you have chosen a paint color - I would love to see some pics of the rest of the place. And she definitely did have some quirky furniture!
