Lori sent us an email: I'm looking for referrals for two types of painters. First, do you know of a source to spray paint kitchen cabinets doors (now 80's oak - eek!). I want to get a smooth finish, and not do it myself.

Sarah Richardson always creates lovely furniture and updates kitchens by getting her furniture spray painted on "Room Service" (alas, in Canada). I also have a 30's metal cabinet that I want to get sandblasted and painted and I believe that's something that automotive repair/painters can do, but don't know quite where to start looking.
Anyone have local tips/resources for Lori??

The cabinets in the picture are from a Jeffrey Bilhuber-designed apartment. I'm pretty sure they're sand-blasted metal, not paint.
it's not "spray paint", it's pressurized spray painting. it's good quality paint in a dust-free environment applied using a high powered sprayer. but i have no recommendations for you, sorry!
for your metal cabinet, what you want to look for is a company that does "powder coating". some places will specialize in furniture, but maybe someone in Chicago can give you a good referral. as a ballpark, i got an estimate for doing a 4-drawer file cabinet here in Austin and it came to about $300.
If your cabinets are metal call around to auto body shops. They should be willing to paint anything...
If you want to try painting the metal cabinet in place, you could try electrostatic painting. By charging the metal, it reduces the amount of over-spray. There are a lot of painters who can do it--I'd check the yellow pages.
Any cabinet refacing company should be able to handle painting your oak cabinets.
I'm dealing with the exact same oak cabinet issue! I've been painting my kitchen cabinets by hand, but was watching Design Inc. and heard Sarah say she had kitchen doors and drawers sprayed for around $15 per door. I looked into it and that is exactly the price I was quoted. Any cabinet maker should have the equipment to do this. I live about three hours south of Chicago and found many places willing to do this, so I'm sure you'll have no problem in the city. I think it will be well worth the money....but save cash by doing the cabinets yourself.
the photo is from an old AT:SF post (as linked to above). They are painted silver, according to the post/source.
sorry here is the link again!
for the metal cabinet, I would call two jakes in williamsburg
I'd just make the point to be cautious about having a cabinet made from sheet metal sandblasted. I've seen cabinets ruined because the metal warped from the heat and pressure.
Amarie - I live an hour south of Chicago and would like to have my cabinets repainted... can you give me the names of the places your are referring to that will do it for around $15 a door?????
Amarie is a moron - we were inquiring about spray-painting METAL cabinets in CHICAGO!
