I'm trying to find a modern rug for my living room for a reasonable price. I love this rug at Room & Board...the stripes, the color palette... but $999 is just too much. I've checked the usual suspects (Ikea, CB2, West Elm, etc.) without finding anything similar. Has anyone seen anything like this someplace else for less money they can recommend? -Tim

Check HomeDecorators.com and Overstock.com. What size do you need?
I was just going to post overstock.com as well. I bought an absolutely stunning wool rug from them - free delivery, it was a great bargain. (and arrived within two to three days of me ordering it)
The challenge with overstock is figuring out the exact colors - so you need to read reviews and sometimes take a tiny bit of a flyer. But I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
I like this look with flor tiles: http://www.dooce.com/daily-style/2009/02/06/needlepoint-stripe-flor-tiles
none of these are exact, but...

I've ordered and returned so many rugs from Overstock, I can't even count. I guess I'm picky but the colors have always, always been off by a lot and on multitude of computers. Also, they don't always want to pay for return postage even when they've given incomplete or misleading info. And for rugs, that can be a lot to pay.
Overstock is great for a lot of stuff but maybe not for big impact, colorful purchases.
i've seen similar at worldmarket.com, they're all jute: the basanti, hemanta and cool garden. two are under $50 right now

What about the Cayenne rug at Crate and Barrel? The stripes are narrower, but it is similar.

The 6x8 is $899, but the 4x6 is only $399.
Try Eurway.com, Chiasso.com, GarnetHill.com, ContemporaryRugs.com, LinenSource.com, RugsExpress.com. I just took a quick look at all of those, and each has something at least in the same genre as your (expensive!) Room & Board selection. Happy shopping...
Home Hardware sells rugs like these- do you have Home Hardware in the States?
I've been looking for a lower cost version same rug also. Here's what I've found
At overstock....

One of the closest and cheapest was at Walmart. Shocking!

With any tufted wool rug though really check out the smell. I've been burned by Pottery Barn rugs in the past. If you smell burnt rubber....run! The smell only gets worse.
Not identical, but the Cleo rug is at the Crate and Barrel outlet for $199 for 8x10. The "brown" Cleo has a similar palette.

http://www.dashandalbert.com/ They have beautiful hooked and runner rugs at reasonable prices.
Believe it or not, Shaker Workshops is a good option:
http://www.shakerworkshops.com/catalog/rag-rugs.php/18R11
It's nearly exact, only cotton instead of wool.
The problem with wool rugs is the amount of fuzz balls you will find all over your home, so I concur with the person above on the Shaker Workshops rug.
I bought a flotaki at Cost Plus in a cayanne like shade and it's impossible. Perhaps a shorter knit wool wouldn't be so fuzzy.
Good luck! I spent months trying to find the perfect rug and still am unsure this one is right!
try lowe's or homedepo, also jc penney.
oh , also walmart.
check out the chindi rugs at target- i like this bright one, but there are more neutral options too. and 59-79 dollars!

The Shaker rug is wool.
I second the Walmart comment. We have that rug and it is really close to the one you like.
Why do so many rugs smell like burnt rubber? Esp at Pottery Barn? Is it the wool? or something they add to the rug?
I found some surprisingly affordable rugs at Pottery Barn--cotton, though.
Wow, after looking at the suggested alternatives, I think I'd save up for the real thing. The others are all stripes, but they are usually one row stripes, not varying widths like the original, the colors are mainly harsh, the textures are mostly coarse... they really have little in common with the R&B rug. Maybe if you keep an eye out, you will luck into something in a discounter like Home Goods. Theirs tend to be nicer but a very hit-or-miss proposition...
The burnt rubber smell is the latex glue they use to make hand-tufted wool rugs. It can smell if not cured properly (which is common apparently), and there's no way to fix it. I had a rug that was fine for about a year, then the smell came. It was awful and we had to throw it away. I'll never buy a hand-tufted wool rug again, or any rug that uses latex glues or backing, which makes buying a rug very difficult because that's like 80% of all affordable rugs -- total waste of money.
Here's the AT rug smell thread...

Try this rug from IKEA...I bought one for my apartment. Mine is larger and costs $399. It is the GEDSER rug.
