Good Questions: Small Portable Hard Drive Recommendations?

Dear Unplggd, I just upgraded to a new laptop after owning a desktop for several years. I love my new MacBook but I've quickly realized that the downside of switching to a portable computer is the hard drive space. After years of endless amounts of hard drive space in a tower case, the 160GB drive doesn't leave me quite as much space for my music and photo collection. Do you have any good recommendations for drives that are stylish and portable for a newly converted laptop user? Sincerely, Susan.

Susan, as someone who also has moved over to a laptop just recently, we're experiencing the very same setback transitioning from a desktop tower to a laptop. We had two internal drives and a couple of externals to keep our media all stored away happily with room to spare. Now our 250GB internal drive is already filling up, with just 80GB left after migrating just some of our music and photos over. An external drive is a must these days for just about anyone besides the most casual of users.

The ToughDrive Pink 250GB USB is notable not only for its cute pink casing, but also because the 2.5" hard 250GB USB 2.0 drive comes suited with an internal anti-shock mechanism and can withstand a fall from 2 meters up. Not that we toss our drives about, but when you're mobile, you never know when you might accidentally knock an external drive off a table while packing up or setting up.

Another drive from the same manufacturer which we're personally looking into is the Mobile Drive XXS, the world's smallest 2.5" USB-2 external hard drive. The bus powered connectivity (no additional power cables, Ma!) and the 320GB of additional space for $130 seems ideal for those of us who want to throw it into our laptop case for those impromptu work sessions at the local coffee spot or anywhere else.
