Good Questions: Suggest a Table for My Kitchen?

I recently painted my kitchen and have been doing some redecorating but have been unable to decide on a table for the nook. I want something small enough that I will be able to utilize the 1930's built-in cabinetry but large enough for two to eat comfortably. Any suggestions for a functional and stylish table would be appreciated. Thanks! Marisa

This space has a ton of potential — you've got great built-in storage, natural light and the walls are painted a fresh pale blue. From the pictures, I think a round table would work best. But first? You will need to declutter and get rid of the bench, the red IKEA shelf, the trashcan and the wine storage. Trying to fit all of these little things and a little table will only make the space more complicated. You don't want to go too small for a table, a round design that seats 4 should be perfect (but of course measure your space!)

Now for a table! I would love to see a Platner table in this space (but fully realize this is a major expense!). Who has suggestions?

I would suggest a wooden farmhouse style table with dropsides. I want one for my studio so that I can put up the sides to do projects and whatnot on, but drop the sides when I would like a bit more room. And it would look lovely with your cabinets.

Lovely little spot. Is the bench sturdy enough to sit on? You could have a fat cushion made to fit the bench (awning stripe in the blue and white?) Definitely calls for a round table. Natural wood top, maybe painted legs in a similar color---I see bottle blue and bottle green over there on the shelf, which would be pretty. Paint the bench same color perhaps.

I can understand why you love the Platner table, but I think it would be disappointing in this space.

I just can't see the uber-modern, shiny, and sterile Platner table in that cozy, vintage space. I think it needs something charming, comfortable, warm, and inviting.

this is also a lovely table that would work well in your space. And the semicircular bench is a great idea too!

I like SunnyBlues idea to put a cushion on that bench and use it as one of the seats at the table.

A small round table would be nice. I don't think 2 people need a lot of room. I think the Platner would overwhelm the space.

A round pedestal table will probably make the space easiest to navigate in - maybe a little bistro table would be cute.

Very nice nook -- I agree with a round bistro table: White mosaic with medium blue and ochre/yellow accents would be perfect. Match to your little planter on the window ledge there. I love the red color that you added with that metal shelving unit. That would be nice for plates or a bowl on top of the table..

An antique drop-leaf table would work well, as would the bistro table others have mentioned.

It looks like your space could only handle a 42" dia table max - probably better w/ a 36" round table.

I think that a simple white painted pedestal table made of oak would look best: Why not have a local Amish craftsman make one for you? I've found them online at various Amish places for @ $600 (no leaves).

I think the teepee table would work fine. Although, I think I would go with a white pedastal table to really make the paint pop and bring some modern to the awesome nook.

Ikea has a similar one too. If you can afford a real one, go for it, of course.

I think it would be a good balance.

Side note: I love, love, love this blue. It will now only be a matter of time before my bedroom is this color.

What about a smaller pedestal table like this? I think white may be too much white all together so the built-ins won't make as big of an impact.

You might think about fighting the fussiness and going for something unexpected - a modern minimalist look in metal and/or glass.

I think a Saarinen Tulip Table would be perfect! (Of course, if you don't have any other modern touches in your place, this could be a little random...)

The paint color is Benjamin Moore Aura and the color is Tranquil Blue. Thank you for all the suggestions, I have a lot to think about now.

I'd like to second jfinteriors suggestion of the white Crate&Barrel pedestal. I think it works perfectly in every way. I'm all about modern, but I don't think this is the place of it. Too stark with the nice vintage cabinets.

I would leave the space empty and put in a windowsill garden.
