Amanda sent us an email: I bought this rug at the Sandwich Antiques fair several weeks ago. Unfortunately, I didn't realize it was terribly stained with pet urine on the backside, and smells like it, too...
I've tried bissell cleaning the back and front, and the rug is too delicate to hold up. I've thought of taking it to a laundromat and sticking it in a big washer on a gentle cycle. I thought maybe that would have less 'pull' on the fabric. For now it is airing outside anytime the weather is decent. Any ideas on how to help this rug?
A standard go-to for deodorizing is to sprinkle baking soda on the rug. This post on natural cleaning methods also suggests adding "some dried crushed lavender or basil. Wait about 1/2 hour. Vacuum." Pet smells (especially urine) may be the toughest of them all, though, so we're going to open this one up:
