Good Questions: Who Designed This Artwork Print?

It's a Damien Hirst - also known as the man behind shark-in-a-tank, splatter tie dye and diamond-skull fame amongst other things. Of the top of my head, I think that one might be "Valium" (that series is all based on drugs).

Only $20,000 USD... a bargain... NOT! This look like it can be reproduced by Illustrator pretty easily and then you can have the poster printed online.

I remember that image actually... it was from Martha Stewart Living magazine years ago!

Ha, I feel silly now because I saw that Hirst piece in person years ago. I just assumed it was a reproduced knockoff or "inspired" piece.

Just as an aside - If somebody was to shell out the $20K for this piece, just a word of caution that the market was flooded with fakes of this piece (as well) as the companion print, LSD a few years back (fake signatures, fake edition numbers, etc) and being passed off at not fake prices.

Apparently Minty wasn't the only person who thought it would be okay to replicate the artist's work.

Those dishes look like vintage lustreware to me. I remember tearing this page out from Martha stewart mag back in the day..or was it the now defunct Blueprint? I don't remember.

It's the Swid Powell lustreware in this picture that has always haunted me -- I remember this feature in MSL (it's not vintage). The woman pictured designed the lusterware for Swid Powell -- that was part of the article. I keep haunting the usual china replacement sites for pieces, but never find any in the colours I want.

I really, really wish someone would resurrect Swid Powell and would reissue this line.

Nothing, minty. I think the warnings were directed towards collectors, not someone who just wants a nice looking print in their home.

uh, I'm an artist who does think there's something wrong with copying an artwork for your own personal use. (And aren't collectors people who want a nice looking print, painting, photo, in their home?) I guess the difference is wanting to support the talent, work, student loans, 2nd shifts, studio rents, supplies and sacrifice that make it all possible in the first place instead of taking advantage.

Violation of Copyright Law of 1976, for one small thing.

(No, it doesn't mean anything that you aren't SELLING it, the law restricts the right of making duplicates to the artist, or whomever the artist gives/sells the copyright to -- the artist gets to decide, not some random person who doesn't want to pay the artist for the privilege.)

Choose something else if you can't find an authorized reproduction.

You can't stand on that principal, and then decide the principal doesn't apply when you personally don't like the artist... what if people felt that way about you or your work?
