"We were taught in this society that we must have ownership of so much. But this has just caused clutter in our lives and this is a reflection of our spiritual clutter. Just give your unnecessary stuff away...Life is chaotic only if we allow it to be. And you don’t want to be so attached to objects that those objects begin to define you.
“Check yourself,” he said. “What drives you? When do you feel the most alive? Those are the things you should do.”"

Don't get me started.
I have worked in the advertising world and I must say that advertising is the single most caustic force on our sense of balance and well being. Ads exist for one reason only: to provoke a sense of dissatisfaction with your current status, possessions, or appearance. The hope of the advertiser is that if they can provoke enough dissatisfaction, you will be motivated to purchase their product as a "cure" for what you lack. When you consider that the average American is exposed to approximately 600 ads in a day, is it any wonder that we live in a perpetually unhappy culture where "more" is considered to be the default answer for all of our problems, real or imagined.
I think when Anderson suggested living minimally he wasn't endorsing that I go out and buy an Eames recliner and a Noguchi coffee table... or was he?
Perceived obsolescence. Everyone should watch "The Story of Stuff" which is a free internet movie. It will open up your eyes to what we have been a victim to as consumers.
i think another factor is because we often fill our lives with trivial, meaningless junk and THINGS.
What people should value most isn't stuff, but, well, people.
In my opinion, a lack of something in a relationship (or lack of relationships) is a main reason why people constantly fill their lives with meaningless and perishable crap.
I have a relationship with my orla keily tableclothe.
lol
