Q: I live in New York, and have been looking for a great bold print upholstery fabric to recover a very traditional wooden rocking chair (fabric on the seat and headrest). I'd love your recommendation for locations (in NY or online) where I could find unique, uncommon bold prints (think Anthropologie-esque).

Shaw's Original Fir...
I'm sure there's better, but I've used Mood and B&J in the west 30's before
Have you tried etsy?
I really like this shop.

I haven't been in awhile--but there used to be a dealer at the brooklyn flea that has exactly the type of fabric you are describing. They might still be there.
I think the Thomas Paul for Duralee prints are fabulous and Anthropologie-esque... I have an Anthropologie parrot chair and I'm using one of the Thomas Paul fabrics for curtains. Under $25/yard if you google around...

Thank you all so much! I love the anthropologie parrot chair! Duralee looks perfect!
The fabric district has zillions of choices. Or if you want truly unique fabric, maybe check out some textile design programs (FIT?) to see if students have created original fabric designs.
Try Zarin's on Grand between Orchard and Allen. They have two floors of just upholstery fabric.

If you're willing to make the trek into another borough, Brooklyn General has a great selection of fabrics:

Next time you're at Chelsea Market, take a look at the store on the left as you first enter from 9th Avenue; there are four traditional Queen Anne arm chairs covered with eye-popping African fabrics that are incredible.
There's a solid supplier of African fabric on 125th St., north side of street east of H&M. Also on West 116th St. around Lenox.
For other fabrics, try Joe's Fabrics on Delancey (entrance on Orchard, I think?) and Zarin's (Grand & Allen) and Mood Fabrics (37th & 8th, I think.)
You can design your own fabric & have it printed @ Spoonflower.com. Prices are really reasonable, too.
