Growing up in suburbia and now living in the city, I never tire of the chance to see a truly great dark sky. When staying at a friend's house on the island of Hawaii, I got to indulge in my passion. Her place is nearly 5000' up, with the nearest streetlight 3 miles away. I would turn off the downstairs lights and wait for my eyes to adjust to the dark, then put on a heavy coat (temp is typically in the mid 40's with a good breeze) and step outside. The sky would look like impossibly black velvet that someone with a brush and spray can splattered white paint all over. It was hard to pick out constellations, for there were far too many stars to see.
