Green Design: Reclaimed Wood Furniture by Uhuru

Uhuru is making a living off the stuff the rest of us throw away. This Brooklyn-based "design + build" company creates striking furniture entirely from wood scraps. We strive to make furniture and products that are beautiful in their simplicity with an acute awareness of materials, and craft. Most of the things we make use materials that have been reclaimed, recycled, repurposed, reused or otherwise rejected from their original function. Uhuru co-founder and designer, Bill Hilgendorf's strong belief in recycling and redefinition is paying off. His Stoolen design, a stool made from discard pile wood and an aluminum bicycle rim, won a 2007 Organic Design Award from organicARCHITECT. posted originally from: AT:Chicago

Stoolen Lite is the table version of the original design. It's still made with scrap wood but it's been updated (weighs less) and is minus the bike rim. We love the patchwork detail on the surface!

The Beam Coffee Table is different in the sense that it's not made up of many pieces of scrap, just one big one. Uhuru constructed this table from a piece of timber that they rescued from a building demolition. We bet this one is still fairly heavy. Since Uhuru's designs are often unique and usually customizable, they don't have any prices listed on their site. If you contact them, perhaps you can work out a deal by promising them exclusive rights to your wood pile. Good links: • The SCRAP HouseSteelogic Low Coffee Table
