This is a good question that hasn't been asked here yet, but we're sure it's just a matter of time: When you're traveling, is it greener to drive or fly?
That plane is going to New Orleans anyway, why not just grab a seat, right? That's what a reader at Grist just "Asked Umbra," so we were curious to see her answer (they're always entertaining and well-researched).
In short: Umbra recommends taking the bus.
The logic behind hopping on that plane seeing as its already headed in the right direction? It doesn't really play out so well.
We were worried about that.
Read Umbra's full answer over at Grist. And then go out an buy a bus ticket.

Unless I'm missing something, I'm not finding anything about planes or buses at http://www.re-nest.com/re-nest/news/killer-couches-report-by-friends-of-the-earth-043948.
(bad link in the post)
Are there long distance buses in California? I've never heard of anyone taking one.
There's Greyhound. And for the, erm, 'adventure travel' experience, Green Tortoise.
Whoops! Thanks frozenactivist. The link should be fixed.
